Volcanoes avoid sweep at Spokane
By HERB SWETT
Of the Keizertimes
The Volcanoes came from
behind Monday to edge Spo-
kane 3-2, avoiding a sweep at
the end of a fi ve-game road
series.
In the Indians’ fi rst inning,
starting pitcher Sean Hjelle
walked Jax Biggers, and hot-
hitting Curtis Terry drove him
home with a double to left
fi eld. After two innings, Ke-
aton Winn relieved Hjelle.
Spokane’s next run came
in the fourth. Sherten Apostel
was hit by a pitch with one
out and moved to third base
as Tanner Gardner singled to
right. A throwing error by
catcher Ricardo Genoves al-
lowed Apostel to score.
The Volcanoes threatened
in the fi fth. Wander Fran-
co singled to right but was
thrown out trying to stretch it
into a double. Dalton Combs
singled to right, Genoves
struck out, a wild pitch by
starter Seth Nordlin moved
Combs to second, Nico Giar-
ratano walked, and Jett Man-
ning grounded into a force
out.
In the Salem-Keizer sixth,
Joey Bart walked with two out
and reached third on David
Villar’s double to left. Franco
drove in Bart and Villar with a
double to left, tying the score.
Bobby Evelt relieved Nordlin
and retired the side.
Mack Meyer replaced
Winn to start the bottom of
the sixth. After he retired the
fi rst two batters, Gardner and
Jonah McReynolds singled.
Sidney Duprey took the
mound and retired the side
with a strikeout.
Manning singled to center
with one out and Aaron Bond
walked in the Volcano sev-
enth. Wes Robertson took the
mound and walked Manning
to load the bases but got the
next two batters to pop out.
The winning run came in
the eighth. Franco walked,
and Combs singled to right.
Emmanuel Clase relieved
Robertson. A sacrifi ce bunt
by Genoves moved Franco to
third and Combs to second. A
throwing error by shortstop
Biggers let Franco score.
Trevor Horn pitched the
eighth and Jesus Tona the
ninth for the Volcanoes. Horn
walked Terry but got the next
batter to pop out, and a dou-
ble play followed. Tona retired
the Indians in order.
Duprey was the winning
pitcher at 2-2 and Robertson
the loser at 2-1. Tona got his
12th save.
The Volcanoes ended up
with eight hits and the Indians
fi ve.

Volcanoes 5, Boise 3
It took only 2 hours and 35
minutes for the Volcanoes to
win this three-game home se-
ries, and all the Salem-Keizer
runs came in the fi rst inning.
After Boise scored its fi rst
run in the fi rst, Diego Rinco-
nes hit a one-out single, and
an outfi eld error put him on
third base and let Joey Bart
go from the batter’s box to
second. David Villar doubled
both of them home, and Wan-
der Franco hit a home run.
Two batters later, Robinson
Medrano homered.
The Hawks added a run
in the fourth as Jeff Bohling
homered, and their fi nal run
came in the eighth.
Solomon Bates, the fi rst of
three Volcano relievers, won
his sixth game against no de-
feats, and Jesus Tona had his
11th save. Alec Byrd, Boise’s
starter, was the losing pitcher
with a 2-3 record.

Spokane 18, Volcanoes 4

Spokane 8, Volcanoes 5
A fi ve-run Spokane rally
in the fourth inning was too
much for the Volcanoes to
overcome.
Each side had 12 hits and
two errors in this game that
guaranteed a series win for the
Indians. Salem-Keizer hit the
ball hard enough times but of-
ten right at a fi elder.
Three singles, two walks, a
hit batsman, and an error pro-
duced the fourth-inning runs.
Spokane also had the only
home run of the game, a two-
run shot by Tanner Gardner in
the sixth.
Wander Franco had three
hits and drove in three runs
for the Volcanoes.
Starter Jack Latz was the
winning pitcher at 5-2 despite
coming out of the game with

Spokane 6, Volcanoes 3
Spokane’s mastery over the
Volcanoes continued.
The Indians scored the fi rst
run of the game in the fi rst in-
ning, and Salem-Keizer tied
the score in the top of the sec-
ond, but Spokane added two in
the second and led the rest of
the way.
Greg Jacknewitz, the Volca-
noes’ starting pitcher, allowed
nine hits in his three innings,
including a two-run homer by
Tanner Gardner in the third,
and gave up fi ve of the Indians’
runs. JJ Santa Cruz and Matt
Frisbee pitched well in relief,
but the Volcanoes’ hitting went
nowhere. Aaron Bond led Sa-
lem-Keizer’s offense with two
hits, including a home run
with Wander Franco on base.
Franco also had two hits.
Tai Tiedemann started for
Spokane and got the win for a
3-2 record, and Cole Uvila had
