Salem-Keizer enters fi nal stretch of season
By HERB SWETT
Of the Keizertimes
Wednesday, Aug. 15
Volcanoes 6, Boise 3
Salem-Keizer evened the
series with this one, snapping
a fi ve-game losing streak.
The Volcanoes led all the
way, scoring three of their runs
in the second inning. Aaron
Bond tripled and scored on a
double by Wander Franco. A
wild pitch moved Franco to
third base, and Dalton Combs
drove him in with a triple.
Combs scored as Ricardo
Genoves grounded out.
Boise got one run in the
second on the only home run
of the game, by Cade Harris.
The Volcanoes scored once
in the third and twice in the
fourth, and the Hawks got
two runs in the fi fth.
Keaton Winn, the fi rst of
three relief pitchers, got the
win for a 3-1 record. Jesus

Volcanoes 7, Boise 4
The Volcanoes took the
rubber game of this three-
game series just before return-
ing home.
Although Salem-Keizer led
all the way, Boise stayed tough
and outhit the Volcanoes 12-2.
The Volcanoes overcame the
Hawks’ hit advantage and four
errors to stay on top. Each of
them except David Villar had
at least one hit.
After Boise cut the Volcano
lead to one run in the seventh
inning, Aaron Bond led off
the eighth with a triple, and
newcomer Nick Hill followed
with a home run. Diego
Rincones did not have one of
his big nights offensively but
threw out three baserunners,
two of them at home.
Solomon Bates was the
winning pitcher in relief with
his fi fth victory against no
losses. Ryan Walker got his
second save.
Saturday, Aug. 18
Hillsboro 4, Volcanoes 2
This game was scoreless
until the seventh inning.
Hillsboro scored three of its
runs in the top of the seventh.
William Gorman singled and
moved to second base on a
walk to Ryan Tufts. Both run-
ners moved up on a ground
out and scored on a double
by Jorge Perez. Perez reached
third on a single by Jake Mc-
Carthy and stole home.

with two runs in the sev-
enth. Wander Franco walked

Nico Giarratano singled

reaching third. A sacrifi ce fl y

Combs.
In the Hops ninth, Perez
singled, moved to second on a
single and third on a walk, and
scored on a throwing error by
shortstop Giarratano.
Ethan Larrison was the
winning pitcher in relief for
a 5-1 record, and Josh Green
got his ninth save.
Sunday, Aug. 19
Hillsboro 9, Volcanoes 8
This exciting game, which
became a home run derby in
the seventh and eighth in-
nings, was not enough to keep
the Volcanoes from getting
swept in the series.
Hillsboro scored once in
the fi rst, and Salem-Keizer
came back with two runs in
that inning. Nick Hill singled,
Joey Bart was hit by a pitch

from Matt Mercer, and both
advanced on a wild pitch and
scored on ground outs.
The Hops tied the score in
the fi fth and added two runs
in the sixth, but the Volcanoes
scored four sixth-inning runs.
Three of the runs came on a
home run by Dalton Combs
with Wander Franco on base
and a solo shot from Robin-
son Medrano.
In the seventh, an attack
that included shots over the
fence by Andy Yerzy, Jorge
Perez, and Zachary Jones gave
Hillsboro four more runs. Yer-
zy also homered in the eighth,
as did Wander Franco and
Medrano. That was not quite
enough.
Reliever Yelson Santana
was the winning pitcher at
2-0, and Chester Pimental had
his fi fth save. The loss went to
reliever Alex DuBord for an
0-2 record.
Monday, Aug. 20
Boise 8, Volcanoes 4
The losing streak contin-
ued in this home opener.
Boise led all the way, scor-
ing three runs each in the fi rst
and second innings. Salem-
Keizer was outhit only 11-10
but left 11 men on base to
three for the Hawks.
Bright spots for the Volca-
noes were three hits by Kyle
McPherson and two each
by Aaron Bond and Wander
Franco, with McPherson and
Bond each hitting a solo home
run; and closer Jesus Tona’s in-
ning with a strikeout and one
baserunner.
Boise also hit two homers,
by Cade Harris and Daniel Ji-
pping, each with one man on
base,
Both starters were the
pitchers of record. Pearson
McMahan was the winner
with a 3-4 record.
Tuesday, Aug. 21
Volcanoes 9, Boise 6
Salem-Keizer had had
enough.
After getting swept by Hill-
sboro and losing the home
series opener to Boise, the
Volcanoes overcame a 6-1
defi cit after 3-1/2 innings and
chipped away at the Hawks.
The lead came in the four-run
eighth. They also overcame
three of their own errors and a
passed ball, and Boise’s Terrin
Vavra hit the only home run
of the game.
In the eighth, Kyle
McPherson doubled, Diego
Rincones walked, and Joey
Bard doubled both home. Da-
vid Villar singled, and a single
by Wander Franco scored Bart.
Villar reached third base on an
error and scored on a single by
Nick Hill.
Matt Frisbee was the win-
ning pitcher at 3-1.
