Delbert Kurtz
1925-2018
Delbert Chester Kurtz was
born in Keizer, Ore., near
where Bi-Mart now stands,
on November 1, 1925 to
Frederick Godfrey Kurtz and
Mary Barker Kurtz. During
his adventur-

spent
time

Siletz, Rock
Creek
and
Rogue River
where they
lived in cabins and gathered
cascara bark to sell and mined
for gold. He attended school
in Salem until serving in the
U.S. Navy from 1943-46, in-
cluding the South Pacifi c War
Theatre. He married Betty
Reeve on June 20, 1947, re-
cently celebrating their 71rst
wedding anniversary at home.
Returning to Keizer in 1962,

Kenney, a longtime Salem

15 years before joining The
Thrift Store, said Keizer and
the former Goodwill location
were a natural fi t for the new
venture.
“We followed them into
a spot that was doing well to
begin with. Keizer has a nice

start,” he said.

UNITED: Org may get

Mooney responded that she
understood the concern, but
that providing the meal was an
important part of the organiza-
tional goals of bringing as many
people as possible to the table.
“I believe that providing
a meal and coming around a
table over a meal adds to the
collaboration happening. It's
one less hurdle,” Mooney said.
She added that she is working
on getting the meals donated,
but the program is still in its re-
looking
back in
the KT
building stages.
Councilor Bruce Ander-
son echoed some of Freeman's
concerns.
“I would like more informa-
tion about the programs you
are supporting. I would like to
see you taking the dollars and
directing them toward the pro-
grams you are seeking to sup-
port. I'd like some more meat
on the bones,” Anderson said.
The approval for the $1,000
disbursement came with the
caveat that the money not be
used for meals and a request
for regular reports back to the
council on progress.
Mooney had lined up
matching funds from the Salem
Leadership Foundation and she
was not certain how the limited
disbursement would impact
those plans.
The haggling over $2,000
came three weeks after the
council forgave more than
$13,000 owed by Keizer Little
League to the facility it man-
ages in a Keizer park.
