Volcanoes enter break on winning streak
By HERB SWETT
Of the Keizertimes
The Volcanoes gained a
one-game edge in their fi ve-
day road series with the Tri-
City Dust Devils on Friday,
winning 5-1.
Aaron Bond, Ricardo
Genoves, and Christopher
Burks had two hits apiece for
Salem-Keizer. Reliever Ryan
Walker won his fi rst game
against no losses, striking out
four in 3-1/3 innings.
The game was scoreless for
the fi rst two innings, and in
the third the Volcanoes rallied
for four runs.
Genoves doubled down
the left fi eld foul line, and
Burks drove him in with a
single to center fi eld.
Kyle McPherson walked,
and Bond scored both run-
ners with a triple to right.
Diego Rincones brought
Bond home with a sacrifi ce
fl y to right.
With two out in the fourth,
Genoves hit a 3-2 pitch from
starter Henry Henry over the
left fi eld fence for the fi fth
Volcano run.
Salem-Keizer threatened
in the fi fth. Burks led off
with an infi eld single but was
thrown out trying to steal
second base.
McPherson fl ew out
to right. Bond doubled to
center, but Rincones hit a
grounder off Henry’s glove,
and Henry quickly retrieved
the ball and threw to fi rst
base for the third out.
In the Dust Devil fi fth,
starting pitcher Greg Jack-
newitz showed signs of tir-
ing. Justin Paulsen led off
with a triple to right center.
Jose Lezama, on a 3-2 count,
drove Paulsen in with a single
to center.
In the process of striking
out Elvis Sabala, Jacknewitz
delivered a wild pitch, send-
ing Paulsen to second.
Grant Little hit a line drive
into third baseman David
Villar’s glove, but a pitch hit
Blake Hunt, and Owen Mill-
er walked on a 3-2 count.
The bases were loaded.
Jacknewitz missed quali-
fying for a win by one out.
Manager Hector Borg re-
placed him with the sidearm-
ing Walker.
Olivier Basabe hit a sharp
grounder to Villar, who
grabbed the ball back-hand-
ed and fi red it to fi rst base-
man Wander Franco.
Korey Anderson pitched
the seventh inning, Nick Ku-
zia the eighth, and Diomar
Lopez the ninth for Tri-City.
Sidney Duprey pitched
the ninth for the Volcanoes.
Henry was the losing pitcher
with a 4-2 record.
Wednesday, Aug. 1
Tri-City 3, Volcanoes 2
Bats were quieter than
usual in this fi rst game of a
road series, and the quieter
bats belonged to Salem-
Keizer.
The Volcanoes, who were
outhit 9-5, scored both their
runs in the fi fth inning.
Mikey Edie was hit by a
pitch, stole second base and
took third on a catcher’s bad
throw, and scored on a wild
pitch after Kyle McPherson
walked. Diego Rincones
doubled McPherson home.
The Dust Devils scored
one run each in the second,
third, and eighth. Olivier Ba-
sabe swung the biggest Tri-
City bat, hitting a single and
a double, scoring a run, and
driving one in.
Joe Galindo was the win-
ning pitcher in relief with a
2-0 record, and Jordan Guer-
rero got his sixth save. Trent
Toplikar, the second of three
Volcano relievers, took the
loss at 1-1.
Thursday, Aug. 2
Volcanoes 6, Tri-City 4
An inside-the park home
run by Aaron Bond and Jesus
Tona’s eighth save in as many
opportunities were the high-
lights of this one.
The Dust Devils scored
the fi rst two runs of the game
in the third inning, and Sa-
lem-Keizer responded with
four runs in the top of the
fourth. Tri-City scored once
in the fourth and once in the
fi fth, but the Volcanoes scored
the last two runs in the eighth
and ninth.
In the Volcano fourth, four
hits, an error, and a wild pitch
provided the four runs. The
biggest blow was a two-run
double by Wander Franco.
Bond’s homer came with two
out in the eighth.
Miguel Figueroa, the sec-
ond Volcano reliever, got his
fi rst win against three losses.
The losing pitcher, also in re-
lief, was Gabe Mosser at 1-1.
Saturday, Aug. 4
Volcanoes 15, Tri-City 3
This lopsided win moved
the Volcanoes into a fi rst-
place tie with Hillsboro and
guaranteed them a series win.
Salem-Keizer’s biggest in-
ning was the seven-run fi fth,
with a three-run home run
by Aaron Bond the biggest
hit. A double, four singles, and
an error also contributed to
the rally.
In the eighth, David Villar
also hit a three-run homer.
The Volcanoes had a total of
18 hits.
Manager Hector Borg
lifted starting pitcher Jake
Wong after three scoreless
innings and put in Keaton
Winn, who had his second
win against one loss.
The losing pitcher was the
Dust Devils’ starter, Adrian
Martinez, at 2-4.
Sunday, Aug. 5
Volcanoes 5, Tri-City 1
Salem-Keizer reached an
8-5 record for the second half
of the season by taking four
out of fi ve games in Pasco.
Seth Corry, one of the
newer Volcanoes, started on
the mound and became the
winning pitcher with a 1-0
record, striking out fi ve in his
fi ve innings.
David Villar hit his ninth
home run in the fi fth inning
with one on, and Joey Bart
hit two triples and scored two
runs.
Matt Frisbee and Trent
Toplikar pitched in relief for
the Volcanoes.
Cole Bellinger, who start-
ed for the Dust Devils, was
the losing pitcher at 1-5.
WEST,
continued from Page B1
West Salem sophomore,
also hit a home run.
Kamden
Combs,
of
Philomath, pitched all fi ve in-
nings, allowing only three hits.
The Vandals jumped on
Colorado right away in game
one, scoring four runs in the
top of the fi rst inning. They
then added two runs in the
sixth and six in the seventh to
win 12-3 and force a winner-
take-all game two.
Tied 0-0 with two outs and
a runner at fi rst base in the top
of the sixth, Covalt singled to
left fi eld.
Kami Gibson and Bella
Fleener then hit back-to-back
RBI singles, scoring Davis and
Covalt to give the Vandals a
2-0 lead. Gibson then fi nished
off the Angels in the circle,
holding them to just two hits
over seven innings.
The tournament featured
16 teams from Oregon, Colo-
rado, California, Washington
and Nevada.
The Vandals will hold try-
outs for next season at South
Salem High School on Satur-
day, Aug. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to
