Volcanoes win four straight

Volcanoes 6, Eugene 2
A strong start on the
mound for Greg Jacknewitz
and 11 hits from his team-
mates gave the Volcanoes the
rubber game of this series and
brought their season record to
17-16.
The fi rst two Salem-Keizer
runs came in the fi rst inning
when David Villar singled
home Aaron Bond and Kyle
McPherson. In the second,
Nico Giarratano’s fi rst career
home run, a solo shot, gave
the Volcanoes all the runs they
would need.
Eugene’s runs came on a
homer by Nelson Velasquez
in the fourth and a double by
Luis Vazquez in the fi fth that
scored Erick Gonzalez.
In the Volcano sixth, three
runs came on singles by Ri-
cardo Genoves and Bond and
doubles by Chris Burks and
McPherson.
Jacknewitz
had
eight
strikeouts in his fi ve innings
and ran his record to 4-1, Ri-
ley Thompson, who started
for the Emeralds, took the loss
at 0-2.
Thursday, July 19
Spokane 7, Volcanoes 5
Salem-Keizer led 1-0 after
two innings, but then the visi-
tors from Spokane took over.
The Indians scored once in
the third, once in the fourth,
and rallied for four runs in
the fi fth. The Volcanoes never
caught up.
In the Spokane fi fth, a
double, two singles, a walk, a
stolen base, and two sacrifi ce
fl ies provided the four runs.
The Volcanoes answered in

Spokane had one home
run, Julio Pablo Martinez’s
fi fth, in the seventh with the
bases empty.
Hans Crouse was the start-
ing and winning pitcher for
the Indians at 3-1, and Cole
Uvila had his second save.
Norwith Gudino started and
lost for the Volcanoes for a 3-4
record.
Friday, July 20
Spokane 5, Volcanoes 3
The Indians led all the way
in this one, scoring a run in
the fi rst inning and three in
the second before the Volca-
noes crossed the plate.
Julio Pablo Martinez led
the way in the second with
a two-run home run. Salem-
Keizer also had a homer, from
Aaron Bond in the sixth with
Nico Giarratano on base. Spo-
kane outhit the Volcanoes 11-
5.
Seth Nordlin went eight
innings for the Indians, getting
his third win against one loss.
Jake Wong, who started for
the Volcanoes, was the losing
pitcher with an 0-1 record.
Saturday, July 21
Volcanoes 11, Spokane 8
This was a comeback, and
a wild one.
The Volcanoes overcame
four errors, fi ve wild pitches,
and three passed balls, along
with 11 Spokane hits to get
their fi rst win of this home
series.
Salem-Keizer’s biggest in-
ning was the four run sixth.
Dalton Combs doubled to
drive in Chris Corbett and
Ricardo Genoves. Kevin Ri-
vera tripled Combs home and
scored on an error.
The Volcanoes hit three
home runs: Kevin McPher-
son’s third, Corbett’s fi rst,
and David Villar’s fi fth. Scott
Kapers homered for the In-
dians.
Trent Toplikar was the win-
ning pitcher in relief with a
1-0 record, and Ryan Walker
got his fi rst save. The losing
pitcher was Reggie Meyer at
0-2.
Sunday, July 22
Volcanoes 6, Spokane 4
Salem-Keizer evened the
series at two games apiece, this
time having little more than
Curtis Terry to overcome.
After the fi rst inning, in
which a home run was the
fi rst of Terry’s four hits, the
Volcanoes scored twice in
the third. The Indians tied the
score at 3-3 with a two-run
third, but the Volcanoes had
two runs in the sixth and were
ahead for good.
Dalton Combs hit his sec-
ond home run in the sixth
with Chris Corbett on base.
Spokane had one more hom-
er, by Starling Joseph in the
eighth with the bases empty.
Keenan Bartlett was the
winning pitcher in relief at
1-2. JJ Santa Cruz, who joined
the Volcanoes from the Au-
gusta GreenJackets as Doug

The Volcanoes opened this
series in Eugene with their
fourth
come-from-behind
win in a row.
Salem-Keizer scored the
fi rst run of the game with Kyle
McPherson’s fourth home run
of the season in the sixth in-
ning. The Emeralds responded
with two runs in the bottom
of the sixth, and the Volcanoes
tied the score in the eighth.
Nico Giarratano led off
the eighth with a double,
reached third on a wild pitch,
and scored on a single by Jose
Layer.
In the top of the 10th, Da-
vid Villar bounced a double
into the center fi eld stands,
driving in Giarratano and
Layer. Nelson Velasquez start-
ed the bottom of the 10th at
second base and eventually
scored, but that was as far as
Eugene got.
Matt Frisbee was the win-
ning pitcher at 2-0 and Sean
Barry the loser at 2-1.
