By HERB SWETT

A fi ve-run eighth inning and
the relief pitching of Doug Still
led the Volcanoes to a 6-2 win
over their Eugene hosts, eve-
ning the series at 1-1.
Salem-Keizer scored the
fi rst run in the second inning.
Joey Bart led off with an infi eld
single. David Villar singled to
center fi eld, and a walk from
Emerald pitcher Derek Casey
loaded the bases. Wander Fran-
co grounded into a double play
that let Bart score.
Sean Hjelle, the Volcanoes’
starting pitcher, was relieved
after two innings by Alex
DuBord, who also went two in-
nings. He allowed four hits and
the Emeralds’ fi rst run.
In the bottom of the third,
Gustavo Polanco led off with a
single to right center fi eld and
went to second base as Fernan-
do Kelli fl ew out to center. Po-
lanco reached third on a ground
out and scored on a single to
center by Jonathan Layer.

seventh innings, allowing one
hit and no runs and striking out
fi ve. He became the winning
pitcher with a 2-0 record. Matt
Frisbee pitched the last two in-
nings.
Eury Ramos relieved Casey
after two innings and pitched
fi ve innings, giving up four
hits but no runs. Yan De La
Cruz pitched two-thirds of the
eighth, allowing fi ve runs, three
of them earned, on three hits.
He became the losing pitcher at
0-1. Eugenio Palma pitched the
fi nal 1-1/3 innings.

with Combs reaching third. A

Everett 7, Volcanoes 4
This opening game of a road
series had Salem-Keizer ahead
in the top of the third inning,
but the AquaSox scored three
times in the bottom of the third
and led the rest of the way.
Although Everett outhit the
Volcanoes only 9-8, the third-
inning rally featured a two-run
homer by Josh Stowers as well
as two walks, a single, and a
double. The Aqua Sox had an-
other home run, by Connor
Hoover, and Joey Bart hit one
for the Volcanoes.
Everett pitchers totaled 13
strikeouts and Volcano pitchers
only seven. David Ellingson got
the win in relief at 2-0, and Joey
Gerber had his fi rst save. Mack
Meyer took the loss.
Thursday, July 12
Volcanoes 3, Everett 1
It was a game of clutch
pitching and revived hitting as
the Volcanoes scored their fi rst
run in the fi rst inning and led
all the way.

than usual, three innings, getting
his fi rst win against no losses. Je-
sus Tona picked up his fi fth save.
AquaSox starter Max Roberts
was the losing pitcher at 1-3.
Salem-Keizer outhit Everett
12-8, and the Volcanoes’ biggest
blow was a bases-empty home
run by Joey Bart in the eighth
inning, his sixth homer of the
season. Kyle McPherson, David
Villar, Wander Franco, and Nico
Giarratano had two hits apiece.
Friday, July 13
Everett 3, Volcanoes 1
The host AquaSox reversed
the previous night’s score in this
game of few hits.
Again the Volcanoes scored
the fi rst run of the game, but
then Everett slowly took over,
scoring a run each in the third,
fourth, and fi fth.
In the top of the fi fth, Kyle
McPherson hit a one-out dou-
ble, and Diego Rincones and
Joey Bart were hit by pitches.
McPherson scored as David Vil-
lar grounded into a force out.
Everett starter Carlos Her-
nandez then found the strike
zone and became the winning
pitcher. Joey Gerber got his fi fth
save. Gregory Santos started for
Salem-Keizer and took the loss
despite seven strikeouts and
only one earned run.
Saturday, July 14
Everett 8, Volcanoes 2
Salem-Keizer had a 1-0 lead
until the bottom of the fourth
inning, when Everett scored
three runs.
The AquaSox added four
in the seventh, and each team
scored once in the eighth. It was
largely another case of the other
guys putting their hits together
and keeping the Volcanoes from
doing the same.
Everett outhit the Volcanoes
14-8, with Connor Kopach
and Ryan Ramiz of the Aqua-
Sox getting three hits each and
Ryne Ogren driving in three
runs.
The Volcanoes’ fi rst run came
in the second, when a double by
Nico Giarratano scored Aaron
Bond, who had singled. In the
eighth, Kevin Rivera reached
fi rst base on a force out and
scored as Robinson Medrano
doubled.
Both starters were the pitch-
ers of record. Norwith Gudino
took the loss for a 3-3 record,
and Orlando Razo was the
winner at 1-2.
Sunday, July 15
Everett 7, Volcanoes 6
The hard-fi ghting Volcanoes
evened their season record at
15-15 in a game that gave Ev-
erett a series win of four games
to one.
Salem-Keizer outhit the
AquaSox 11-10 and even led
4-0 after 2-1/2 innings. Everett
scored three times in the third
inning and had two runs each in
the fourth and seventh. The Vol-
canoes scored once in the sixth
and once in the seventh.
For the Volcanoes, Jose Layer
hit his third home run in the
third and Joey Bart in the sev-
enth. The AquaSox hit three
homers, one each by Charlie
McConnell, Ryan Garcia, and
Nick Rodriguez.
Salem-Keizer’s Jake Wong
started on the mound and
struck out four in his two score-
less innings. Manager Hector
Borg, continuing to give pitch-
ers starting and relieving expe-
rience, used three relievers, of
whom the last, Mack Meyer was
the loser at 1-2. Everett’s Jamal
Wade was the winner in relief
with a 1-1 record, and Nolan
Hoffman had his fi rst save.
Monday, June 16
Eugene 6, Volcanoes 5
(11 innings)
Each side scored two runs in
the 10th inning, but after Sa-
lem-Keizer scored once in the
11th, Eugene responded with
two runs.
Diego Rincones hit his
fourth home run in the fourth
and Dalton Combs his fi rst in
the 10th. For the Emeralds,
Nelson Velasquez hit his fourth
in the 10th.
The Volcanoes scored fi rst in
the fi rst and had a 2-1 lead from
the fourth until the bottom of
the sixth, when Eugene tied the
score.
