Volcanoes win Tri-City series
Saturday: Volcanoes 9,
Tri-City 8
The Volcanoes got their sec-
ond one-run victory in their
fi rst two games.
Salem-Keizer led most of
the way, but a three-run homer
by the Dust Devils in the top
of the eighth inning gave the
visitors from Pasco a one-read
lead. The Volcanoes came back
with two runs in the bottom
of the eighth and held Tri-City
scoreless in the ninth.
The winning pitcher, in fi ve
innings of relief, was former
starter Norwith Gudino. After
relieving starter Gregory San-
tos, he gave up four runs, all
earned, but had fi ve strikeouts.
Tri-City hit all three home
runs of the game. Aldemar
Burgos hit one in the fi fth in-
ning with a runner on, and
Owen Miller had one in the
same inning with the bases
empty. Olivier Basabe hit the
three-run shot.
Diego Rincones had three
hits for the Volcanoes and
drove in three runs. Teammates
Kyle McPherson and Trevor
Abrams had two hits each.
Sunday: Tri-City 11,
Volcanoes 0
Continued hot hitting of
the Dust Devils dropped Sa-
lem-Keizer’s record to 2-1 for
the season.
The trouble started in the
top of the fi rst inning, when
the Volcanoes’ Greg Jacknewitz
walked the fi rst three batters.
Tri-City’s offense in the three-
run fi rst included a two-run
double by Luis Asuncion.
Tri-City added four runs in
the second inning, but it wasn’t
all hitting for the visitors. Start-
ing pitcher Cole Bellinger,
brother of Dodger fi rst base-
man Cody Bellinger, went fi ve
innings with four strikeouts to
get the win. Jacknewitz, who
gave the Dust Devils more
runs than they needed, was the
losing pitcher.
The visitors outhit the Vol-
canoes 13-4, with home runs
by Mason House and Tre Cart-
er. Salem-Keizer’s hits included
a double by Nico Giarratano
and a single by Rincones, who
came out of the game with a
.583 batting average.
Added to the Volcano ros-
ter were three pitchers: Mack
Meyer, Orleny Quiroz, and
Doug Still. Meyer pitched two
relief innings with a strikeout,
a walk, and no hits.
Monday: Tri-City 8,
Volcanoes 2
The Dust Devils’ four fi rst-
inning runs were more than
they needed to whip the Vol-
canoes 8-2 and even the series
at two wins each.
Tri-City knocked starting
pitcher Miguel Figueroa out
of the box after two-thirds of
an inning with an attack that
included home runs by Tre
Carter and Michael Curry.
In the Volcano third, Nico
Giarratano reached fi rst base
on an error and second on a
passed ball and scored on a
single by Jose Layer.
An outfi eld error moved
Layer to third, McPherson was
hit by a pitch, and Layer scored
on the play. Tri-City scored
a run in the fi fth, one in the
eighth, and two in the ninth.
Tuesday: Volcanoes 4.
Tri-City 0
A win in the rubber game
ended the Volcanoes’ season-
opening series.
Four pitchers combined for
the shutout, with Solomon
Bates relieving starter Keaton
Winn and striking out four in
his two innings as the winning
pitcher.
Alejandro De La Rosa had
his fi rst save. Dalton Combs
and Kevin Rivera had two hits
each for Salem-Keizer, with
Rivera scoring two runs and
Combs one. Rincones, who
kept his hitting streak going
with a single, drove in two
runs. The Volcanoes had eight
hits to Tri-City’s four.
KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley
Jamie Moyer, former Major League Baseball pitcher, threw out
the fi rst pitch and signed autographs at Saturday’s game.
