Chamber volunteers on to new adventures
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
For the past two years, McNary High
School seniors Jordyn Maret and Amanda
Patton have been regular fi xtures around
the Keizer Chamber of Commerce.
Since their junior year, both have taken
part in the Salem-Keizer Youth Leader-
ship Program, which is something like an
apprenticeship offering high school stu-
dents insight into the inner workings of
leadership in the local business commu-
nity. It was eye-opening for them in more
ways than one.
“I always try to stick to a plan in
school and it gets frustrating when I have
to change it, but seeing that same thing
happen with a giant group of adults was
really reassuring,” Maret said. “Not ev-
erything always ends up as planned and
changes always have to be made.”
The pair spent the fi rst year of the
program attending informational tours
alongside members of the Salem Cham-
ber of Commerce, like learning about
the justice system by touring a prison
and speaking with a judge at the Marion
County Courthouse. During the past ac-
ademic year, the two worked more close-
ly as part of the organizing force behind
projects like KeizerFEST and the Festival
of Lights parade.
“I grew up watching the parade and
going to the Iris Festival itself and I had
no idea how much work went into that,”
Patton said.
Patton’s assignment with the Keizer
Chamber included attending the month-
ly meetings of the chamber board, which
was where she got to see how some of the
information collected on expeditions like
tours gets turned into action.
“I was surprised at how much every-
one had a say in everything. It wasn’t just
one person telling others this is what’s
going to happen, everything was voted
on and there was a lot of discussion,” Pat-
ton said.
Maret was assigned to the KeizerFEST
committee, but joined the Festival of
Lights committee on her own initiative.
“Mostly, I was listening and learning
and it became my job to a bunch of Mc-
Nary kids to carry banners. It also made
me more prepared when I jumped into
the KezierFEST planning committee,”
Maret said.
She said the KeizerFEST committee
got more interesting as the actual festival
days approached.
“People would come into the com-
mittee meetings and ask about problems
they were having. We would work with
them and try to get through their prob-
lems together,” Maret said.
In most cases, the parties reached a
friendly resolution, but others were hard-
er to accommodate, she said.
Next fall, Patton will be attending Pa-
cifi c University where she plans to major
in psychology. Maret is going to work on
some core credits at Chemeketa Com-
munity College and hopes to transfer to
Oregon State University.
