The competitors for the title of Distinguished Young Women of Keizer take part in the fi tness
portion of the scholarship program.

thanks to an anonymous

$2,500
scholarships would be awarded
instead of one.
“I couldn’t believe it,”
Burleson said. “I was shocked
at fi rst that there were two
of us. I can’t believe that
somebody would be so
generous.”
Along with Burleson,
Chloe Campbell will also
represent Keizer in the state
Distinguished Young Women
program.
“When they announced
that there were going to be
two winners, I had no idea,”
Campbell said. “College is
so expensive and of course
that’s going to be a factor in
choosing your colleges, the
pricing, so this helps so much,”
Campbell said. “It’s not even
about the scholarship money.
That’s an added plus but just
being able to get all of the
skill sets and experience is so
rewarding and amazing.”
Burleson also received $500
for winning the scholastic
achievement category.
“I’m so excited for what’s
to come and this program has
given me so much,” Burlseon
said. “It’s given me so much
more interview experience
and more confi dence and
walking in heels. I wasn’t able
to walk in heels before this, and
do push ups. I was planning on
going to some cheap colleges
but now my options have
opened up a little more.”
The fi ve girls—Burleson,
Campbell,
Kate
Bomar,
Anni Sykosky and Kaitlyn
Duncanson—were
judged
on fi ve categories—scholastic
achievement (25 percent),
interview (25), talent (20),
fi tness (15) and self expression
(15).
Bomar took home $300
for the spirit award, which is
voted on by the contestants.
For self expression, the girls
were asked what volunteerism
and community meant to
them.
Sydnie Gould and Ivy
Parker, the 2018 Distinguished
Young Women of Keizer, also
performed as well as Jessika
Nanez, 2018 Distinguished
Young Woman of Oregon.
Burleson and Campbell
will compete for the state
title on Saturday, Aug. 11
at Chemeketa Community
College.
“I’m so excited to be able
to spend more time with
Elisabeth and go on to the
state competition,” Campbell
said. “It’s such an amazing
opportunity. We got so much
closer. We used to be friends
when we were little. I’m sad
that it’s over, relieved, but so
excited for what’s coming
next.”
said. “You stayed in school for
13 years and your parents had
no idea what you were go-
ing through. There were chal-
lenges: the language, the social
environment, the economics.
You jumped over all those ob-
stacles.”
In addition to the scholar-
ships presented, one graduate,
Julia Solis, was the fi rst recipi-
ent of the LAC Community
Service Award, which is spon-
sored by Herrera’s family.
“She has been a leader in so
many things, but I especially
appreciate her work as part
of the Kennedy Elementary
School mentors for the past
three years,” Herrera said.
