“I got the opportunity to
watch him grow, not only
as a player but as a person
to the point where we’re at
now, where he’s graduat-
ing,” Kirch said. “It’s been a
real treat and joy. I feel very
blessed to have the opportu-
nity to work with not just a
great player but maybe even a
better person.
“On the basketball fl oor
he’s a great competitor and
demands excellence out of
himself and his teammates
but he’s a guy who does it al-
ways with a smile on his face.
I think he garners a lot of
respect from his teammates
with the way that he carries
himself, not only on the bas-
ketball fl oor but in the class-
room. When we look at how
we want our players to rep-
resent our program and our
school, Chandler is a perfect
example of that. His parents
have done a great job of rais-
ing him. The community has
been great in supporting him
and I couldn’t be happier for
where he’s at.”
Cavell, who led the Celt-
ics with 16.4 points, 6.3 re-
bounds, 4.4 assists and 1.5
steals per game this season,
was unanimously voted to
the All-GVC First Team.
McNary fi nished the sea-
son 20-6, winning the Great-
er Valley Conference and ad-
vancing to the second round
of the OSAA state playoffs.
“He has an incredibly high
ceiling,” Kirch said. “I can’t
wait to see how good he be-
comes. You wish you had one
more year with him because
you just know he’s going to
get better and better.”
Celtics get fi rst league win
ATHLETE
of the Week
McNary baseball ended a
six-game losing streak and got
its fi rst Greater Valley Confer-
ence win, 5-3, at McMinnville
on Tuesday, April 17.
David Allen pitched six and
a third inning, allowing two
runs, to earn the win.
Ryan Thompson got the
fi nal two outs to get the save.
The Celtics scored three
runs in the fi rst inning.
Jacob Jackson was 4-for-
4 with two doubles and two
runs scored.
Lance Becktel was 2-for-4
and scored a run.

Softball
McNary got runners on
base Friday, April 13 at West
Albany.
The Lady Celts just
couldn’t drive them in, falling
10-0 in a battle of two of the
top teams in the Greater Valley
Conference.
Nadia Witt and Alexa
Cepeda led off the game with
back-to-back singles but West
Albany pitcher Mahayla Gam-
ble struck out the next three
hitters to get out of the jam.
After the Bulldogs took a
3-0 lead on two home runs in
the bottom of the fi rst, Mc-
Nary again threatened in the
second, loading the bases with
no outs.
But again Gamble struck
out three consecutive hitters
to get out of the inning.
The streak continued into
the third inning. Haley Ebner
led off with a single and then
three more Lady Celts struck
out.
West Albany loaded the
bases with no outs in the bot-
tom of the third and cashed in
with fi ve runs to take an 8-0
lead.
Faith Danner doubled to
lead off the top of the fourth
and Abbie Covalt walked but
again McNary failed to score
as Gamble recorded her 10th
strikeout.
The Lady Celts stranded
two more runners on base in
the top of the fi fth. The Bull-
dogs scored two runs in the
bottom of the inning, ending
the game early.
McNary, entered the game
averaging more than 12.5 runs
and hadn’t been shut out since
a 3-0 loss to Tigard on March
27, 2017.
The Lady Celts are back
at home Friday, April 20 at 5
p.m. against Sprague.
Girls Tennis
McNary defeated McKay
5-3 on Tuesday, April 17.
The Lady Celts won three
of four singles matches.
At No. 1, Hannah Childress
cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Katherine Perez also had an
easy time at 2, winning 6-1,
6-0.
Avery Haymowicz also
won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2,
at No. 4.
McNary won two doubles
matches as Gina Munguia and
Ainoha Zorzo won 6-4, 6-4 at
No. 2 and Taylor Walker and
McKenna Sieg battled to a
2-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory at 3.

who ultimately chose Riv-
erside because of its location
and the relationships she built
with head coach Nikki Palm-
er and the current players she
met.
McNary head softball
coach Kevin Wise introduced
the girls at the celebration in
the school’s library.
“These two young ladies
are two of the best that I’ve
had the good fortune to coach
and I’ve been doing this prob-
ably as long as they’ve been
alive,” Wise said. “I’ve seen a
lot of girls come through and
they are not only the best ath-
letes but two of the best kids
that you will ever be around.”
Witt, who was voted Co-
Greater Valley Conference
Player of the Year last season
as well as First Team All-State,
hit .600 with four home runs,
14 doubles, 28 RBIs and 38
runs.
“It’s a treat to watch her,”
Witt said. “She makes it look
effortless.”
Ebner, who has played fi rst
base the past two seasons but
will catch in college, was also
voted to the All-GVC First
Team last year after hitting
.465 with two home runs, 30
RBIs and 33 runs.
“She is the smartest player
that I’ve ever been around,”
Wise said. “Anyway you can
imagine, she knows the game
and she’s like another coach
on the fi eld.”
Witt and Ebner won a
conference championship as
freshmen and then again last
season as juniors.
Best friends, they’ve both
enjoyed watching each other
grow up and develop.
“Watching her (Witt) be
the star of the show has been
really fun for me,” Ebner said.
“It’s just been a great journey
and I’m excited to go on to
the next level.”
a great teammate, always fi ght-
ing for the person on the team
that maybe doesn’t have that
voice. Shows up early, stays
late, all of those things that are
going to make (her) great at
life.”
After McNary fi nished
4-10 Shore’s freshman year,
the Lady Celts improved to
6-8 her sophomore season
and then qualifi ed for the state
playoffs the past two years,
with a combined record of
16-9-5.
“It’s defi nitely been a jour-
ney,” Shore said. “First year was
very rough, defi nitely. I think
that the biggest thing that
we’ve all tried to do is have fun
throughout the four years and
the more that we had fun, the
better we played. The more
that we loved what we were
doing, the more work we were
willing to put in for it.”
Before leaving the program,
Shore got Nash back for a
prank he played on her and the
rest of the team four years ago,
when he pretended to have
the senior captains arrested.
“He got a police offi cer to
come and ask for our senior
captains my freshman year.
But nobody else on the team
knew except for the captains.
They acted it out. They were
stone-faced and totally play-
ing into it. He brought us all
over to the girls and they were
standing behind a shed with
their hands behind their back
so it looked like they had been
cuffed. They were playing into
it a lot. I was freaking out.
They pulled their hands from
behind their back and they
had squirt guns and sprayed us
all.”
Her senior season, on Nash’s
birthday, Shore had cops come
to practice to arrest her coach.
The offi cers told Nash that a
player had fi led a complaint
against him and then called
over Shore, who said Nash was
the coach who had pranked
her four years earlier.
“It was a lot of fun,” Shore
said of pranking her coach. “I
didn’t tell any of the girls ei-
ther so all of them were into
it. My mom got it on fi lm and
even from where she was fi lm-
ing you could see his facial re-
actions. He had no idea what
was going on.”
The University of New
England, located in Biddeford,
Maine, 20 miles south of Port-
land, is a Division III program
in the Commonwealth Coast
Conference.
Witt was originally going
to play at Western Oregon but
de-committed with the quest
of joining a Division-I pro-
gram. She signed her national
letter of intent with Riverside
in November.
“I just felt like I needed a
change, a new environment,
a new everything,” said Witt,
SHORE,
continued from Page B1
Shore started 55 of 57
games at McNary, scoring 15
goals and adding 11 assists.
She was a team captain for
three years.
“It’s been awesome to
have a leader like Jessy on this
team to help mold this pro-
gram,” McNary head coach
A.J. Nash said. “Her leadership
has changed the course of Mc-
Nary soccer. It’s been pretty
fun to watch. It’s been through
grit and effort. Jessy from the
very beginning has exempli-
fi ed good character and being
