McNary would use part of
its $42 million from the bond
relocating its softball/soccer
fi elds to the nearly 4.5 acres
purchased from St. Edward
Catholic Church. The cur-
rent softball and soccer fi elds
would become additional
parking. Gragg would like for
part of the new fi elds to be
turf, which would be paid for
by the booster club.
“Practice fi eld are great fi ve
or six months out of the year
and then they’re a swamp the
rest of the six months,” Gragg
said. “I could easily see a
booster project of turfi ng that,
putting lights in that, having a
fi eld house. If we were able to
turf an additional practice fi eld
or multi-use fi eld, that instant-
ly becomes a year-round prac-
tice facility for marching band,
for soccer, for softball, for nu-
merous sports, lacrosse, youth
athletics.”
Gragg would also like to see
a new scoreboard in the gym
that would benefi t basketball,
volleyball and wrestling as well
as upgrading banners and tro-
phy cases in the school.
“Some of those little things
are a big deal in a tight com-
munity,” Gragg said.
“All of the freshmen are
super close with my family. It
was great getting to play with
them and getting to practice
with them and just being
around them all of the time.
I consider them my little sis-
ters.”
McNary fi nished the sea-
son 17-8 overall and 11-5 in
league play. The Lady Celts
lost to Oregon City in the fi rst
round of the playoffs.
“My teammates worked
together and got me the ball,”
Doutt said. “It wouldn’t have
happened without them.”
Senior Paige Downer and
junior Abbie Hawley were
voted to the All-GVC Second
Team. Junior Sabella Alfaro
was an honorable mention
pick.

I wanted Riccardo Gardelli,
an exchange student from Italy
who came to America with a
dream to play college basket-
ball, to get that kind of expo-
sure. I wanted more for Garvey
and Cavell, two incredibly nice
kids who along with the rest
of the varsity basketball team
spent the afternoon before
reading to second graders at
Keizer Elementary and during
the holidays bought Christmas
presents for a family in need.
After the game, Kirch said,
“sometimes you don’t know
why things don’t work out the
way you want them to and the
way you hope they do.”
I know at least one reason
why, as much as I hate to ad-
mit it.
