McNary sweeps 200 free relays in first meet
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
McNary’s swim team came
up short in its first dual meet
of the season, falling to Forest
Grove on Thursday, Nov. 30 at
the Kroc Center.
The girls’ standings were
the closest with the Vikings
edging McNary 93-71.
Alyssa Garvey, Emma Gar-
land, Emily Alger, and Haley
Debban won the 200 yard free
relay in 1:54.53. Debban fin-
ished second in the 50 free in
27.25, followed by Garvey in
third in 27.66.
Freshmen twins Alex and
Bella Beard were limited due
to a club meet the following
weekend but were still able to
make their mark.
Alex won the 100 back-
stroke in 1:08.48. Bella and
Alex also took first and sec-
ond in the 50 free junior var-
sity race in 27.40 and 27.53,
respectively.
“Considering our short
amount of time in the pool,
I thought we looked good,”
McNary head coach Casey
Lewin said. “It will be exciting
to see how we improve.”
McNary’s boys, which lost
101.5-58.5, were missing club
swimmers Kyle Hopper and
Harrison Vaughn.
Grant Biondi, Brock Wyer,
Wyatt Sherwood and Jabez
Rhoades won the 200 free re-
lay in 1:44.32, edging Forest
Grove by less than a second.
Lewin was also impressed
by McNary’s times in the 50
free JV race, which should add
depth to the boys team. Nikita
Martushev won the event in
26.26. Collin Wentworth took
second in 27.25 and Ethan
Whalen placed third in 27.94.

“I want to play them to-
gether when I can,” Doran
said.
“They’ll be playing togeth-
er for the next four years so it’s
fun to see them on the floor
together.”
Doutt led the freshmen
with nine points. Proctor add-
ed four.

Vincent said he just had to
keep his composure.
“I knew it was going to be
tough and it definitely was,”
Vincent said.
“I tried to keep my cool
and just calm down and think
about what I needed to do. I
kind of shut down for a sec-
ond. I waited until the last
second to get ahead because
there was no way I was going
to be able to hold him down
for a minute. I’m out of shape
still. I just waited until the last
30 seconds, took him down,
got lucky and got a near fall to
win the match.”
At 106 pounds, McNary
freshman Grady Burrows went
2-1, earning a 16-12 devision
to open the tournament and
finishing it with a pin in the
first period.
“It’s always nerve-wracking
to send a freshman out in the
lineup,” coach Ebbs said. “If I
had my way, I might not ever
do it because there’s so many
other factors that play into
that with the confidence and
the strength and the develop-
ment. I believed in him and he
got after it and that speaks to
his years that he spent com-
ing up through (Celtic) Mat
Club.”
Noah Grunberg (145),
Garrett Wampler (182), and
Randal Nordberg (195) all
went 2-1 as well, each getting
a win by forfeit.
At 220 pounds, sophomore
Anthony Garcia Reyes earned
a pin in his first match before
dropping the next two.
“His confidence is pretty
high and I’m pretty proud
of him,” coach Ebbs said of
Reyes. “He ran into a couple
big, mean guys after that, that
reminded him that we’re not
done getting better yet.”

game, there’s some nerves as-
sociated with that but I think
they’ve stepped up, especially
Leah, you wouldn’t know
anymore,” Doran said. “The
first game you could kind of
tell but these last two games
she’s really comfortable out
there, played really hard, been
great defensively for us and of-
fensively. She made some re-
ally great passes.”
Kailey Doutt and Paige
Downer led the scoring, each
finishing with 12 points.
The Lady Celts began the
season with a 56-24 win at
Barlow on Thursday, Nov. 30.

“We were tired but made
mental mistakes, too,” Kirch
said. “We acknowledge it and
our kids see that. We’ve just
got to get better.”
Kirch played 10 different
guys with eight getting in the
scorer’s book.
Senior guard Andrew
Jones had eight points. Noah
Hudkins added six points and
eight rebounds in the post.
“Noah’s done a really good
job for us,” Kirch said. “He’s
very smart. He’s not real
flashy but he’s effective. He
made a real nice tip pass on
an offensive rebound. For the
most part he was able to play
without fouling. He shoots a
high percentage. In fact, we
probably need to get him the
