Marching to 1st McNary’s Air Force Ju- nior Reserve Offi cer Training Corps won a fi rst place trophy at Albany’s Veterans Day Pa- rade for Marching Units. Thirty-six cadets braved the cold and rain to win fi rst place at the parade for the fi rst time since 2012, the fi rst year of the McNary program. After the parade the unit made a quick visit to Avamere Courts to thank veterans there for their service. Santa arrives at Volcanoes Stadium via helicopter Saturday, Dec. 2. He will be on-hand from noon to 3 p.m. taking requests and posing for photos with visitors. File Silver Falls celebrates holidays on Dec. 9 Rangers, hosts, and volun- teers are transforming the Sil- ver Falls State Park’s Historic District into a Christmas won- derland for the 40th annual Christmas Festival. The event will be on Saturday, December 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the South Falls Historic District. Musicians and choral groups provide the sounds of the holi- days. Visitors can enjoy cookies and cocoa as they gather in the South Falls Lodge area to hear seasonal stories and music in the afternoon. Or they can get in the spirit by creating make- and-take projects such as holi- day cards, gingerbread houses, festive ornaments, wreaths, nature crafts, and more. There will be guided hikes to enjoy the park in its winter splendor. The Salem Audubon Society is supplying parts, tools, and expertise for bird nest boxes. There is a $5 materials fee for the bird nest boxes. All other crafts and activities at the fes- tival are free. The Silver Falls Lodge and Conference Center will be offering roasted chestnuts, popcorn, coffee and cocoa, as well as holiday craft stations and carnival style games with prizes. There will be snow- fl ake fl urries each hour. A small selection of lunch items will be available for purchase in the hall. A shuttle bus will run continuously between the conference center and the South Falls Day Use area. South Falls Nature Store offers Christmas gifts and souvenirs including hand- made hats, pens, and orna- ments to fi eld guides and na- ture toys. Symphony performs Dec. 1 at WU Oregon Symphony mu- sicians will welcome guest conductor Leo Hussain and world-renowned pianist An- dre Watts for a holiday concert on Friday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m. at Willamette University’s Smith Auditorium. In addition to Grieg’s Pia- no Concerto, a perennial au- dience favorite, the concert features other music from Scandinavia, including Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s Sym- phony No. 5, which depicts the chaos and terror of World War I.
