Fleeing driver plows into carport
Courtesy of KPD
A fl eeing teenage driver crashed into a carport just as police
were going to call off a pursuit.
A 17-year-old driver was
arrested after leading Keizer
police on a brief chase just
before midnight Sunday, Sept.
17.
Offi cer Esteban Perez was
responding to a criminal mis-
chief complaint on Orchard
Street North where a caller
reported a Nissan Maxima
had driven past her car and
the occupants threw bricks
at it.
En route to the address,
Perez spotted a 2004 Nis-
san Maxima on 15th Avenue
North and noticed a taillight
on the vehicle was emitting
white light, a traffi c infrac-
tion, and suspected it might
be the vehicle involved in the
brick-throwing.
Esteban began following
the Maxima and activated
his overhead lights and siren
in an attempt to conduct a
traffi c stop while eastbound
on Willow Lake Road. The
driver showed no intention of
stopping and Perez was soon
traveling at 55 mph with the
suspect car still pulling away.
Perez made a decision to ter-
minate the pursuit and was
calling into dispatch when
the Maxima failed to stop at
a stop sign at Willow Lake
Road North and Windsor
Island Road North. The ve-
hicle continued across Willow
Lake Road and crashed into
a carport at 5210 Windsor Is-
land Road North.
Immediately after the crash
the driver exited the vehicle,
but Perez was right behind
him. The driver complied
with verbal commands as
Perez drew his gun and was
taken into custody without
further incident once cover
offi cers arrived.
The driver was charged
with recklessly endangering
another person, reckless driv-
ing, fl eeing or attempting to
elude a police offi cer, assault
and driving under the infl u-
ence of intoxicants. Two pas-
sengers were also in the Max-
ima at the time of the crash.
