Volcanoes drop four straight
Wednesday, Aug. 9:
Volcanoes 4, Hillsboro 3
This series evener was a
win from behind after the
host Hops scored all their
runs in the second inning.
Salem-Keizer scored two
runs in the fourth inning and
one each in the seventh and
eighth. The Volcanoes were
helped by strong pitching,
which held Hillsboro to fi ve
hits while the visitors had
eight.
Three singles, two stolen
bases, and two force outs gave
the Hops all their runs.
In the Volcano fourth, Or-
lando Garcia led off a walk.
Ryan Kirby singled and ad-
vanced on a throw and a sac-
rifi ce bunt that scored Garcia.
Kirby scored on a ground out.
Shane Matheny led off the
seventh with a double and
scored on a single by Dal-
ton Combs. Logan Baldwin
scored in the eighth by ad-
vancing on two ground outs
after doubling.
Garrett Cave was the win-
ning pitcher in relief for a 1-0
record, and John Russell had
his fourth save. Matt Peacock
was the loser in relief at 0-2.
Thursday, Aug. 10:
Hillsboro 3, Volcanoes 1
Hillsboro pitchers quieted
Salem-Keizer bats to get the
series win.
The Hops, who scored all
their runs in the fourth in-
ning, outhit the Volcanoes
only 6-4 but had the only
extra-base hits of the game,
two doubles.
The Volcanoes scored the
fi rst run of the game in the
third.
Chris Corbett led off with
a single and went to second
base on a sacrifi ce bunt by
Malique Ziegler. Corbett
went to third on a ground out
and scored on a wild pitch
from starter Brian Shaffer.
In the Hillsboro fourth,
four singles, a double, and two
wild pitches by starting and
losing pitcher Jose Marte pro-
duced the three runs. Jorge
Perez hit the double, driving
in the last run.
Marte’s record went to 1-3,
but Andy Rohloff had his
best appearance by far, strik-
ing out four in his two relief
innings. Kevin McCanna was
the winner in relief with a
2-0 record.
Friday, Aug. 11:
Volcanoes 6, Vancouver 2
Improved pitching and
Malique Ziegler’s emergence
from a slump gave the Volca-
noes a win in this fi rst of a se-
ries of fi ve road games.
Vancouver scored the fi rst
run of the game in the fi rst
inning, but Salem-Keizer
came back with three in the
third and stayed ahead.
Starter Jason Bahr was the
winning pitcher at 3-1, strik-
ing out seven in his fi ve in-
nings. Alejandro De La Rosa
and Tyler Schimpf pitched

well in relief.
Ziegler had two hits, in-
cluding his third home run
of the season. Logan Baldwin
had three hits.
Each team had 11 hits, but
Volcano pitchers scattered the
Canadians’ hits.
Vancouver starter Juan
Nunez took the loss for a 2-6
record.
Saturday, Aug. 12:
Vancouver 4, Volcanoes 2
Salem-Keizer had eight
hits, as did the Canadians, but
made fi ve errors to help the
host team even the series.
Ryan Kirby had three hits
for the Volcanoes and scored
a run, but Vancouver’s Kacy
Clemens also had three hits
and batted in two runs.
All the Vancouver runs,
four of them earned, were
charged to starter Greg
Jacknewitz, a newcomer.
Luis Pino and Logan Webb
pitched well in relief.
Jacknewitz took the loss
with an 0-1 record. The win-
ning pitcher was Vancouver’s
starter, Dalton Rodriguez, at
5-4. William Ouellette had
his eighth save.
Monday, Aug. 14:
Vancouver 7, Volcanoes 4
Two bases-loaded walks,
two passed balls, an error, and
only fi ve hits meant another
loss for the Volcanoes.
Only three of the Cana-
dians’ runs were earned. Juan
Benitez, Salem-Keizer’s start-
ing and losing pitcher at 1-4,
allowed four runs, but only
one was earned. Jake Fish-
man was the winning pitcher
in relief with a 1-0 record,
and William Ouelette got his
ninth save.
Vancouver had 10 hits,
with Samad Taylor the only
hitless man in the lineup.
Bryce Johnson was the only
Volcano to have two hits or
score two runs.
The Volcanoes’ best inning
was the fi fth, when Johnson
and Orlando Garcia singled
and advanced on a wild pitch.
Ryan Kirby drove Johnson
in by reaching on a fi elder’s
choice. Garcia scored on a
ground out.
Tuesday, Aug. 15:
Vancouver 10, Volcanoes 5
This meant a 4-1 series
win for the hosts.
It was a contest until the
bottom of the sixth inning,
when the Canadians had their
second four-run rally in suc-
cession. Three singles, a dou-
ble, and a wild pitch put the
game out of reach for Salem-
Keizer.
The Volcanoes scored one
run each in the fi rst, second,
and third. They scored twice
in the fi fth on singles by Ju-
nior Amion and Bryce John-
son, a pitch that hit Logan
Baldwin, and a sacrifi ce fl y by
Ryan Kirby.
Cam O’Brien had four hits
for Vancouver and Norberto
Obeso, Logan Warmoth, and
Brock Lundquist three apiece.
Miguel Burgos was the
winning pitcher in relief with
a 2-0 record. Andy Rohloff,
also in relief, was the loser at
0-2.

bases. Owen Spiwak drove in
Clemens and Adams with a
single to center, with Taylor
reaching third. A wild pitch
scored Taylor, and Lizardo got
Spiwak home with a single to
center.
In the Salem-Keizer sev-
enth, Orlando Garcia and
Shane Matheny walked. Ju-
nior Amion doubled to right,
scoring Garcia and moving
Matheny to third. A ground
out by Dylan Manwaring
drove in Matheny, and moved
Amion to third.
A ground out by Brown
scored Amion. After Ziegler
and Johnson walked, Yordano
Herdenez relieved Rodning
and struck out Baldwin to end
the threat.
Vancouver sought an insur-
ance run in the eighth. Reggie
Pruitt led off with a double to
left and went to third on a sac-
rifi ce bunt, but Matheny, on a
fi elder’s choice that put Logan
Warmoth on fi rst, threw out
Warmoth at home.
John Russell pitched the
ninth for the Volcanoes and
retired the Canadians in order.
Orlando Pascual pitched the
bottom of the ninth and did
the same to Salem-Keizer.
Rodning was the winning
pitcher with a 4-1 record,
and Pascual had his third save.
Cave took the loss at 1-1.
