SECOND,
continued from Page 13
Frandy De La Rosa reached
fi rst on a throwing error by
second baseman Joe Venturino
that let Kirby score. A sacrifi ce
fl y to right by Juan Rodriguez
scored Amion, and Everett’s
lead was cut to 3-2.
Everett added a run in the
third as a triple to right by
Rosario drove in Dixon, who
had doubled.
A three-run rally in the
third put Salem-Keizer ahead
5-4. Bryce Johnson led off
with a single to right center,
and Brown got on fi rst by
forcing Johnson out. Garcia
hit an infi eld single, and Kirby
doubled to right, scoring both
runners. Another Venturino
error let Kirby score.
The AquaSox tied the score
in the fourth, facing a new
pitcher in Michael Rivera, as
Adams homered over the left
fi eld fence.
In the Everett fi fth, Cama-
cho led off with a homer to
left. After a walk to Dixon,
Luis Pino relieved Woods.
Pino had the bases loaded be-
fore retiring Everett with no
more runs in the fi fth. The
sixth was the fi rst scoreless in-
ning for the AquaSox.
Tyler Schimpf pitched the
eighth and ninth for the Vol-
canoes, allowing no runs.
The fi nal run of the game
came in the Salem-Keizer
eighth as pinch hitter Logan
Baldwin hit a one-out, bas-
es-empty home run over the
right fi eld fence.
A long drive by another
Volcano pinch hitter, Shane
Matheny, after Johnson sin-
gled to left center, looked like
a possible walk-off winning
blow, but right fi elder Rosa-
rio caught the ball next to the
fence.
Woods took his fi rst loss of
the season against three wins.
“Situational hitting wasn’t
the best,” Volcano manager
Jolbert Cabrera said after Ev-
erett outhit Salem-Keizer
13-7. He added that the fi rst-
inning errors were costly.
Kirby commented that de-
fense was the big problem.
“We made a couple of mis-
plays in the fi rst inning, and
they just cost us,” he said.
“Just throw strikes,” Pino
said when asked how the
pitching should improve. “At-
tack the zone early in the
game.”
Thursday, Aug. 3:
Everett 11, Volcanoes 10
This home series opened
with a seesaw that ended up
in the AquaSox’s favor.
Salem-Keizer scored four
runs in the fi rst inning, Ever-
ett scored three times in the
second, the Volcanoes wid-
ened their lead in the fourth
and fi fth, the AquaSox almost
caught up with six in the sixth
and added two in the seventh,
and the Volcanoes came up
short with three in the sev-
enth.
The biggest blow on Sa-
lem-Keizer’s side was Malique
Ziegler’s bases-loaded triple in
the seventh. Everett had two
home runs, by Johnny Ad-
ams with the bases empty and
Ronald Rosario with one on.
Friday, Aug. 4:
Volcanoes 8, Everett 6
Everett fought hard again,
but six errors to none for Sa-
lem-Keizer were too much of
an obstacle.
The Volcanoes led most of
the way, but a three-run hom-
er by Greifer Andrade in the
eighth inning tied the score at
6-6. The Volcanoes answered
with two runs in the sixth on
only one hit.
For the game, the Volca-
noes outhit their visitors 12-9.
They hit no home runs; an-
other one by the AquaSox was
hit by Chris Torres in the fi rst.
Orlando Garcia and Rob
Calabrese had three hits each
for the Volcanoes. Bryce John-
son had two.
Aaron Phillips was the win-
ning pitcher in relief and John
Russell had his third save.
Saturday, Aug. 5:
Everett 11, Volcanoes 10
History repeated itself after
two days, with both the score
and the way the game pro-
gressed.
The Volcanoes scored fi ve
runs in the fi rst inning and
had a 5-0 lead through two
before the AquaSox scored
seven times in the third. Sa-
lem-Keizer tied the score
in the fi fth and went ahead
by three in the sixth. In the
eighth, Everett scored the last
four runs of the game.
Manuel Geraldo provided
four of the fi rst Volcano runs
with a grand slam, and team-
mate Orlando Garcia hom-
ered in the fi fth with one
on. Everett’s big hitters were
Johnny Adams, Onil Pena, and
Greifer Andrade.
There were 15 hits on each
side, but Volcano pitching was
the big problem. Two of Ever-
ett’s eighth inning runs were
walked in, both charged to
Andy Rohloff even though
Garrett Cave issued the sec-
ond one.
Rohloff was the losing
pitcher.
Sunday, Aug. 6:
Volcanoes 7, Everett 1
Salem-Keizer evened this
home series with the only
lopsided win of the fi rst four
games.
The Volcanoes, who often
have failed to bunch their
hits this season, put together
a fi ve-run fi fth inning that in-
cluded Orlando Garcia’s fi fth
home run of the season. An
error, two passed balls, and a
hit batsman helped. Garcia
also doubled and scored in the
fourth.
Among the 12 Volcano hits
was Dalton Combs’ fi rst pro-
fessional homer in the eighth.
Jason Bahr returned to
form as a starter, winning his
second game against one loss.
Jose Santiago, the AquaSox’s
starter, was the losing pitcher
with a 1-3 record.
Alex Bostic and John Rus-
sell pitched well in relief for
the Volcanoes.
Tuesday, Aug. 8:
Hillsboro 11, Volcanoes 2
How’s this for a start of a
road series?
Hillsboro scored in each
of the fi rst four innings, in-
cluding six runs in the third,
and Salem-Keizer never had a
chance.
Starting
pitcher
Julio
Benitez, who lasted 2-1/3 in-
nings but was charged with
half of the third-inning runs,
KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley

fi rst professional home run Sunday against Everett.
saw his record go to 1-3.
After
John
Timmins
pitched the rest of the third, he
was replaced by Cesar Yanez,
who had just returned from
several weeks in the Arizona
League and allowed only one
run in the next three innings.
The Hops had 12 hits to
the Volcanoes’ four, three by
Dan Swain, who drove in fi ve
runs.
Logan Baldwin had two of
the Salem-Keizer hits. He and
Shane Matheny scored one
run each.
