Keizer crashes Hoopla
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
Every team that signed up
for Hoopla, a 3-on-3 street
basketball event on Aug. 5-6
in downtown Salem, was
guaranteed at least four games.
Most of the 17 squads rep-
resenting Keizer played many
more.
Bronbron Squad, a team
made up of McNary incom-
ing freshmen, had the most
success. Nate Meithof, Gabri-
el Martinez, Landon Moore
and Eli Petilo went 3-0 in
pool play on Saturday and
then won four tournament
games on Sunday to capture
the 14-and-under boys recre-
ational championship.
McNary sophomores Ju-
nior Walling, Nick Zuro,
Peyton Kreitzer and Riley
Flores, playing as Big Ballers,
also won their fi rst six games
to reach the fi nals, but lost to
Bucket Squad 29-27 in the
championship game of the
15-and-under recreational di-
vision.
Two teams made up of
recent McNary graduates
clashed in the semifi nals of
the Men’s Division-III brack-
et as Trent Van Cleave, Jared
Van Cleave, Tregg Peterson
and Kyle Cooper got the best
of Adam Harvey, Alex Martin,
Hayden Sader and Matthew
Ismay.

McNary hosts
volleyball camp

Crystal DeMello’s fi rst vol-
leyball camp at McNary didn’t
look like a program in transi-
tion with its third head coach
in three years as more than 50
high school girls packed the
gym fl oor.
“It’s exciting to see the girls
ready to join a program and
have the seniors lead a pro-
gram,” DeMello said.
“Great leadership starts
with a great program and
they’re setting the tone and
the pace. I love having that
from the returners to the in-
coming freshmen.”
DeMello noted the par-
ticipation has been strong all
summer as 30 girls consistent-
ly attended open gyms twice a
week through July. They used
the workouts to get to know
each other.
“Coming in as the new
coach, I wanted to make sure
that the girls and I are all on
the same page,” DeMello said.
“It’s always nice to settle in as
a new coach and get to know
the girls. I think that dynamic
is really important.”
DeMello has been im-
pressed by what she’s seen.
“They’re a great group of
girls,” DeMello said. “They are
coachable. They are inspiring.
They push each other to the
next level and that’s some-
thing that has to do with their
own competitive drive.

The Volcanoes lost a hard-
fought rubber game of their
home series to Everett on
Monday by a score of 7-6.
Two fi rst-inning errors, an
off night for Stet Woods on
the mound, and failure to hit
with men on base were the
factors.
It looked like a strong Sa-
lem-Keizer start when a tum-
bling catch by Junior Amion
in left fi eld of a drive from
Chris Torres became the fi rst
play of the fi rst inning.
However, Eugene Helder
then reached fi rst base on an
error by third baseman Tyler
Brown.
Then
Johnny
Adams
reached fi rst on an error by
shortstop Orlando Garcia.
Juan Camacho singled to
left center, driving in Helder.
Oliver Jaskie, the AquaSox’s
starting pitcher, set the Vol-
canoes down in order in the
fi rst.
Troy Dixon led off the Ev-
erett second with a home run
to right center.
Ronald Rosario doubled
to center. Torres walked, and
Helder reached fi rst base on
a fi elder’s choice that put Ro-
sario out at third and moved
Torres to second. Adams
scored Torres with a single to
right.
In the Volcano second,
Ryan Kirby walked and
reached second as Amion sin-
gled to left.
