By HERB SWETT
Of the Keizertimes
Boise took the rubber game
of the Volcanoes’ three-game
home series 3-2 July 14 before
a crowd of 3,032.
Each team had six hits, but
Salem-Keizer had none un-
til the bottom of the fourth
inning, by which time the
Hawks had four hits. There was
still no score.
Volcano pitchers, however,
issued nine walks to three for
Hawk pitchers. Boise made
four errors to one for Salem-
Keizer, but the Volcanoes had
three passed balls.
Jose Marte, the Volcanoes’
starting pitcher, allowed no
runs but was lifted for Luis
Pino with two out in the fi fth
after walking two batters and
letting them advance on a balk.
In the Boise sixth, Ryan
Metzler and Matt McLaughlin
walked with one out. A throw
from catcher Rob Calabrese to
third baseman Michael Sex-
ton got Metzler out, but John
Russell replaced Pino on the
mound. He walked Austin
Bernard and hit JB Moss, load-
ing the bases. He then forced

pitcher Rico Garcia on a pick-
off attempt moved Baldwin to
second, and a single to right by
Manuel Geraldo scored Bald-
win. Salvador Justo relieved
Garcia and retired the side.

the seventh as Daniel Jipping
hit a home run to center.

then Spokane’s bats came alive.
After three doubles, a single, a

John Timmons relieved him.
A wild pitch, a sacrifi ce fl y,

out to end the game.
Volcano manager Jolbert
Cabrera held a clubhouse
meeting and afterward said
the game was largely one of
chances, with men in scoring
position being left on base.
“We didn’t hit the ball early
in the game,” Baldwin ob-
served, adding that early runs
would have helped the pitch-
ers relax.
Lanoo, whose pitching has
been improving, said, “It’s just
been sticking to my game, to
stay confi dent and trust my
stuff.”
