EXTRAS,
continued from Page 10
In the Volcano eighth, Kirby
walked, went to second on a
Manuel Geraldo, and scored as
Junior Amion singled to right
center.
John Timmons pitched the
eighth and ninth for the Volca-
noes. In the ninth, Kwon hit a
two-out single to right, reached
second on a passed ball by
Rene Melendez, and scored on
a single to center by Gonzalez.
That meant extra innings.
Kendry Melo pitched the
10th and 11th for Salem-Keizer
and was the only Volcano pitch-
er who did not give up a run.
With Nick Deeg on the mound
in the 12th, the Emeralds scored
the fi nal run of the game. Pinch
hitter Jhonny Bethencourt led
off with a triple to right. Payne
brought him home with a sac-
rifi ce fl y to right.
Michael Knighton, who had
pitched the 10th and 11th, be-
came the winning pitcher with
a 1-1 record. Luis Aquino had
his second save. Deeg’s loss put
him at 0-1.
“The guys have got to
swing at more strikes,” Volca-
noes manager Jolbert said. “All
pitchers need to throw more
strikes. We’re walking too many
batters.”
Kirby commented, “We’ve
just got to fi nish more games.”
Melo said through an inter-
preter, Parra, that he had been
working on his slider. Asked
how he thought pitchers should
improve, he said they needed to
release pitches out in front.
Wednesday, June 21:
Volcanoes 5, Hillsboro 3
(13 innings)
They showed the day before
that they could be tough, and
in the second game of the Hill-
sboro road series the Volcanoes
were tough enough to win.
The Hops actually led 2-1
after the fi rst inning, but Sa-
lem-Keizer scored once in the
fourth and once in the fi fth and
led until Hillsboro scored once
in the ninth. In the 13th, the
Volcanoes added two and kept
their hosts scoreless.
Malique Ziegler, who came
out of the game batting .370,
led off the Volcano fi rst with a
triple, one of two the visitors
hit, and scored as Kevin Rivera
grounded out.
In the 13th, Rivera hit a
one-out single and scored on a
triple by Juan Rodriguez. Ryan
Kirby singled Rodriguez home.
Volcano starter Stetson
Woods allowed two runs in his
six innings but had six strike-
outs. John Timmins, the fourth
Salem-Keizer reliever, got the
win.

Thursday, June 22:
Volcanoes 8, Hillsboro 6
Salem-Keizer won the series
at Hillsboro by starting its fi rst
winning streak of the season.
The Volcanoes have been
known for late-inning woes,
and the Hops scored all six of
their runs in the seventh after
the visitors scored all eight of
theirs.
The biggest inning for the
Volcanoes was the four-run
seventh. Mikey Edie hit a one-
out single, moved to second
and third on singles by Malique
Ziegler and Juan Rodriguez. An
error by shortstop Yan Sanchez
scored all three and put Ryan
Kirby on fi rst base. Manuel
Geraldo doubled Kirby home.
Four hits, three walks, and
a force out provided the Hops’
runs.
Heath Slatton, who relieved
starter Jose Marte, was the win-
ning pitcher at 1-0. Kendry
Melo had his fi rst save. Starter
Mitchell Aker was the losing
pitcher.
Friday, June 23:
Eugene 15, Volcanoes 5
A depleted bullpen that
had two non-pitchers on the
mound did not keep the host
Emeralds from whipping the
Volcanoes by 10 runs.
Eugene scored fi ve runs in
the fi rst inning, and the score
was tied at 5-5 in the third, but
thereafter it was all Emeralds.
Zach Davis and Tyler Payne
hit home runs, and Payne and
Jose Gonzalez drove in four
runs each. Volcano starter Sid-
ney Duprey left the game after
two-thirds of an inning, and
Hengerber Medina, the fi rst
reliever, took the loss at 1-1.
Matt Pope was the next on
the mound, with infi elder AJ
Ramirez pitching the eighth
and catcher Rene Melendez
the ninth.
Manuel Geraldo had three
hits and Malique Ziegler and
Juan Rodriguez two apiece for
Salem-Keizer.
Elvis Diaz, the fi rst of three
Eugene relievers, was the win-
ning pitcher at 1-1.
Sunday, June 25:
Eugene 7, Volcanoes 4
A 3-0 Salem-Keizer lead at
the end of the fourth inning
turned into a series sweep for
the visiting Emeralds.
In the bottom of the fourth,
a leadoff double by Malique
Ziegler was followed by Junior
Amion’s fi rst home run of the
season. Then Manuel Geraldo
homered.
The Volcanoes were ahead
3-1 in the bottom of the fi fth,
but Eugene scored three runs
each in the sixth and seventh.
Joe Martarano and Kwan-Min
Kwong homered for Eugene in
the sixth.
Heath Slatton, who relieved
starter Alejandro De La Rosa
after fi ve innings, was the losing
pitcher with a 1-1 record. Matt
Swarmer, Eugene’s starter, was
the winning pitcher at 1-0, and
Jhon Romero got his fi rst save.
Monday, June 26:
Boise 8, Volcanoes 2
It was a rough start for this
Salem-Keizer road series, with
the Hawks scoring fi ve times
before the Volcanoes got on the
board.
The fi rst Volcano run was
Ryan Kirby’s fi rst home run
of the season in the sixth in-
ning. The second came in the
ninth, after Dylan Manwaring
reached fi rst base on catcher’s
interference. Pitcher George
Thanopoulos threw the ball
into right fi eld on a pickoff at-
tempt, and right fi elder Aubrey
McCarty made another wild
throw, letting Manwaring score.
Boise outhit Salem-Keizer
10-6, with Will Haynie getting
a single, double, and triple. Mc-
Carty also had three hits. Man-
waring was the only Volcano
with two hits.
Starter John Valek was the
winning pitcher. Alex Bostic,
who started for the Volcanoes,
took the loss.
Tuesday, June 27:
Volcanoes 9, Boise 1
This time, the Volcanoes
stayed tough in the late innings
and evened the series.
It was a team effort, with
Salem-Keizer scoring three
runs in the second inning, two
in the third, and four in the
eighth. Malique Ziegler had
three hits, Gustavo Cabrera bat-
ted in three runs, and all three
Volcano pitchers performed
impressively.
Starter Stetson Woods al-
lowed four hits and had four
strikeouts in his fi ve innings to
get the win with a 1-0 record.
Kendry Melo pitched the next
two innings and struck out six.
Matt Pope pitched the ninth
and fanned two.
The Hawks’ lone run came
in the fi fth, when Sam Tidaback
led off with a home run. Cabre-
ra homered in the second with
Byron Murray on fi rst base.
The Volcanoes’ eighth-in-
ning runs came on three hits,
two walks, three stolen bases,
and a ground out.

staying positive with other
players.
“Isaac joined our team
late, but jumped right in with
a positive attitude,” Coach
Dean Prather said of Isaac
Mallory. “Even after getting
hit with the ball during his
fi rst two games, he hopped
back in the box with a smile.”
Other players received
accolades from fellow team
members, including Brad-
ley Fryman, who agreed
he “never complains, never
quits, and often encourages
his teammates and players
from other teams.” And Ben
DeVos was credited with a
positive attitude that greatly
impacted his fellow team-
mates.
Each nominee will receive
a glass trophy on Sunday,
June 25 at the Keizer Little
League fi eld. KYSA aims to
provide a wholesome envi-
ronment for youth to par-
ticipate in baseball activities,
and to develop in the youth a

through a competitive spirit,
Lane said.
“We strive to provide
opportunities for personal
growth and development of
youth activities while also re-
inforcing positive infl uences,
self-confi dence and self-es-
teem,” Lane said.
