Man stops for cigarette mid-fl ee attempt
About 10:38 a.m. on Fri-
day, April 14, Offi cer Andrew
Cowan responded to a report
of a driving complaint in
which a witness was follow-
ing a car with a fl at tire trav-
eling south on River Road
North.
The witness followed the
black Mitsubishi Lancer from
Brooklake Road Northeast
until it pulled into the 76
Station at 5137 River Road
North. By the time the driv-
er stopped, the fl at tire was
throwing sparks when the
rims came in contact with
the road.
McCowan and Offi cer
Dan Kelley pulled into the
parking lot shortly after the
suspect vehicle and saw the
driver run behind Growl
Movement where he stopped
to light a cigarette.
The man was asked about
the fl at tire and detained in
handcuffs. Further investi-
gation linked him to a hit-
and-run in the 10300 block
of River Road North where
it appeared the vehicle had
crashed into a culvert and
decorative barrel.
D’Mitri Jamal Laney, 28,
of Salem, was arrested and
charged with criminal mis-
chief, failure to perform
the duties of a driver when
property is damaged, driving
under the infl uence of intox-
icants and giving false infor-
mation to a police offi cer.
In addition to local charg-
es, Laney was found to have
an outstanding warrant in
Clackamas County for failure
to appear. He was transported
to the Marion County Cor-
rectional Facility.
D IRECTED PATROL PAYS OFF
IN K EIZER S TATION
A Keizer police offi cer,
acting on observed crime pat-
terns, ended up chasing down
a man he suspected of com-
mitting a crime near Lowe’s
in Keizer Station.
About noon on Friday,
April 14, Offi cer Jeremy
Worledge was proactively
patrolling the Keizer Station
area based on previous calls
regarding shoplifting crimes
committed in the shopping
center. Worledge spotted a
man squatting behind a lawn
mower outside Lowe’s and
acting suspiciously.
Worledge
continued
watching the man as he made
his way to a maroon car.
Worledge noted that the front
and rear license plates on the
vehicle were mismatched and
both appeared to have tape
on them. Suspecting that new
plates had been taped over
old ones, Worledge parked his
car and approached the man
in the vehicle.
As he asked the suspect
about the plates, the man told
Worldge, “Someone else did
that.” The man then put his
car in gear and drove away
rapidly. The ensuing pursuit
wound its way to Portland
Road Northeast from Che-
mawa Road Northeast to
Kale Street Northeast before
ending in a driveway on Cor-
don Road Northeast.
By that time, several oth-
er offi cers had joined in the
chase and the suspect was
taken into custody without
further incident.
Gary Phillip Johnson, 39,
was arrested and charged at-
tempting to elude an offi cer
and reckless driving. After the
arrest, Keizer police offi cials
learned Johnson was already
on probation for attempting
to elude an offi cer and his li-
cense had been suspended.
M AN TRIES CONFISCATING
PIPE WHILE HANDCUFFED ,
IN PATROL CAR
On Thursday, April 12, at
7:30 p.m., Offi cer Scott Bi-
gler was transporting a sus-
pect to the Marion County
Correctional Facility after an
arrest for driving while sus-
pended.
Prior
to
transporting
45-year-old David Ryan
Bates, of Keizer, Bigler per-
formed a pat-down and sus-
pected the man had a glass
pipe in one of his pockets.
Bates objected to further
search and was informed that
a more intensive one would
be performed at the jail.
En route to the jail, Bi-
gler thought he heard glass
breaking in the back seat of
the patrol car. He pulled over
and discovered fragments of
a glass pipe. Bates had been
handcuffed during the ride to
the jail.
A fi eld test on a white
powdery substance came
back positive for metham-
phetamine.
In addition to a charge
of driving while suspended,
Bates faces charges of un-
lawful possession of meth-
amphetamine and tampering
with evidence.
