Gubser neighborhood named Oregon Food Bank’s 2017 Hunger Busters Keizer’s Gubser neighbor- hood was honored with the Hunger Buster of the Year Award from the Oregon Food Bank Network at a ceremony Wednesday, April 12. The award recognizes the contribution that the neigh- borhood makes to end hun- ger by collecting food and fund donations during the Keizer Miracle of Christmas event. During the past three decades, the Keizer Mira- cle of Christmas light dis- play has contributed more than $338,000 and 323,000 pounds of food to hungry families in Marion and Polk counties. The annual tradition be- gan as a friendly competition between a few houses and has turned into a neighbor- hood-wide event with 200 decorated homes. More than 20,000 cars travel through the neighborhood during the month of December. Vis- itors donate food and funds that go to hungry families through the Marion-Polk Food Share network. The Hunger Buster Award is an annual recognition from the Oregon Food Bank Net- work. The Gubser neigh- borhood was presented the award by Rick Gaupo, Presi- dent and CEO of Marion- Polk Food Share. “The Keizer Miracle of Christmas is so special be- cause it is truly a commu- nity event,” said Rick Gaupo. “Everyone works together in the neighborhood during the month of December to make the event happen, and then they take it a step further by using it as a way to help out the community with a food drive.” All those hours...
