including a two-run homer on Friday, April 14 at West Albany.

“That’s really cool to have
that deep of a group. For Loo-
ney to win the long jump, that
was a little bit unexpected,
I’m not going to lie, but it was
wonderful. I knew she was ca-
pable of doing that. Courtney
coming out and doing that was
a real surprise. We were trying
to get her up in the air and it
fi nally clicked. She was able to
get in the air and pull off three
really good jumps. She had a
good series.”
Senior Alex Sharabarin had
another PR in the pole vault,
clearing 12 feet to place sec-
job pitching and kept them
off for the whole game,”
Wise said. “Their No. 4 hitter,
(April) Kingry, I think that kid
came in with seven or eight
home runs and didn’t have a
hit on Friday. Kept her out of
the comfort zone. You keep
their big hitters off and it af-
fects them.”
McNary suffered its fi rst
loss in league play on Tuesday,
April 18, falling at McMin-
nville 5-3.
The Lady Celts jumped
out to a 3-0 lead after two in-
nings as Kinler drove in Witt
and Cepeda with a two-out
double in the fi rst, and Sabella
Alfaro scored on a bases load-
ed walk in the second.
But McMinnville fought
back with two runs in the
third and one each in the
fourth, fi fth and sixth.
McNary is scheduled to
play at Sprague Friday, April
21 at 5 p.m.

McNary versus West Alba-
ny was billed as a heavyweight
fi ght between two undefeated
softball teams in the Greater
Valley Conference.
But the game nearly ended
with an early round knockout
as the Lady Celts won 10-4 on
Friday, April 14 at West Albany.
McNary led 10-0 before
the Bulldogs scored their fi rst
run in the bottom of the sixth
and added three more in the
seventh.
Getting off to a fast start is
exactly what head coach Kev-
in Wise wanted.
“It seems like lately it takes
two or three innings for us to
warm up so we worked re-
ally hard on getting on them
early and we did,” Wise said.
“It was a fun game. I think
that was probably one of our
best games that we’ve had so
far, offensively. We didn’t have
a ton of hits but we had solid
hits at good times.”
Nadia Witt doubled to left
fi eld to lead off the game.
Alexa Cepeda added a in-
fi eld single and Haley Ebner
walked to load the bases.
With two outs, Nicole Du-
ran then doubled on a line
drive to right fi eld, scoring
Witt and Cepeda to give the
Lady Celts a quick 2-0 lead.
Hannah Carr, who was
3-for-3 with three runs, sin-
gled to lead off the top of the
second and then scored on a
two-out base hit from Ebner.
After adding three more
runs in the fourth, McNary
showed off its power in the
sixth. Carr led off the inning
with a solo home run to cen-
ter fi eld. With two outs, Ebner
then connected for a two-run
homer.
“I wasn’t really expect-
ing that,” Ebner said. “I didn’t
think I hit it very well but
I looked and it went over
the fence. I just hit it on the
wrong part of the bat so I
didn’t think I made very good
contact with it.”
Ebner was 2-for-3 with
three RBIs as the Lady Celts
improved to 4-0 in league play
and 9-2 overall.
“It was really good to
get a win from such a good
team,” Ebner said. “I think it
reassured us of how good we
are actually doing. It gave us
a confi dence boost I think. I
was really nervous because we
have such a young team this
year but I think that we have
proven that we belong and
we’re kicking some butt.”
Faith Danner pitched all
seven innings to earn the win,
holding West Albany scoreless
before allowing an unearned
run in the sixth and then a
three-run homer with two
outs in the seventh.
“Faith had another great
ond at Oregon City. It didn’t
come easy.
“He was on his third at-
tempt at 11 and really mentally
grinded down and got that 11
foot,” Gauntz said. “I’m super
excited for Alex. He’s put a lot
of time in.”
Junior Lucas Garvey, in his
fi rst year on the track and fi eld
team, set a new PR of 5-08 in
the high jump.
On the track, junior Casey
Toavs and freshman Caitlyn
Kiefi uk Yates also had personal
records of 17.47 and 17.42 in
the 110 and 100 meter hurdles.
Brendan Van Voorhis fi n-
ished third in the 100 in 11.19.
Next up, the Celts will
compete in the Wilsonville In-
vitational on Saturday, April 22.

McNary’s varsity baseball
team lost to McMinnville 4-0
on Tuesday, April 18.
Riley Hays had two of the
Celtics three hits on singles in
the second and fourth innings.
Collin Wentworth added a
single in the third.
Josiah Gilbert started on
the mound and went six in-
nings, allowing seven hits and
two earned runs. He struck
out seven batters.
McNary defeated Century
8-4 in a non-league game on
Thursday, April 13.
After a slow start, the Celt-
ics scored four runs in the
fourth and two each in the
fi fth and sixth innings.
Joshua Benson was 3-for-4
with three RBIs. Brendan Fri-
zelle and Jonah Geist both had
two hits and two RBIs. Tyler
Covalt also added two hits.
Kyle McAllister gave up
fi ve hits and one run over four
innings to earn the win.
Matthew Ismay pitched the
fi nal three innings, allowing
three runs on two hits and a
walk.
McNary is inviting Keiz-
er Little League players and
coaches to its next home
game—Friday, April 21 at 5
p.m. against Sprague. There
will be a reserved section of
seats and give away prizes for

Brendan Van Voorhis celebrated signing to DePaul with his
mother Meredith, sister Samantha and father Brian.
DEPAUL,
continued from Page 10
Van Voorhis originally
wanted to play football in
college but switched his Next
College Student Athlete
(NCSA) online recruiting
profi le to track and fi eld dur-
ing his junior year.
“Ultimately, it came down
to my body,” Van Voorhis said.
“In football, you get hit and
beat up. In track I don’t get
beat up at all.”
Van Voorhis was able to use
his track speed on the football
fi eld, catching 32 passes for
943 years and 14 touchdowns
last season, despite missing
one game while on his visit
to West Point.
“It’s kind of unreal hon-
estly because I didn’t think
that I was going to be D-I for
track,” Van Voorhis said.
“You look at all of these
programs like Oregon and
Florida that are crazy kids and
times. If the DePaul coaches
think I’m capable of doing
that, I’m going to take their
word for it.”
DePaul has a strong track
and fi eld program of its own.
The men’s team was crowned
2017 Big East Indoor Cham-
pions in February.
Van Voorhis saw a glimpse
of that on his visit to Chicago
when he came across the De-
Paul record boards.
“I thought this is the
next level,” Van Voorhis said.
“That’s where I want to be
is competing in college and
running crazy fast times like
that.”
Van Voorhis, who has
maintained a 3.8 GPA at Mc-
Nary, plans to major in biol-
ogy or chemistry and enter
the medical fi eld.
