during a No. 5 doubles match against Sprague last week.

But Jonah Geist was caught
looking at strike three and the
game went into extra innings.
West Albany singled to start
the eighth and got a runner
to third base but Geist, pitch-
ing in relief, was able to get a
ground ball to fi rst base to end
the threat.
Brendan Frizelle walked
to lead off the bottom of the
eighth and advanced to sec-
ond on a wild pitch. With fi rst
base open, the Bulldogs chose
to intentionally walk Ismay.
After both Frizelle and Ismay
advanced to third and second
on a passed ball, Riley Hays
was also intentionally walked,
loading the bases for Gilbert
with one out.
After falling behind 0-2,
Gilbert fouled off a pitch and
took foul balls to earn the
walk and score Frizelle from
third to win the game.
“I took the fi rst one, which
I should’ve hit and then I was
in my head a little bit and
took that second one,” Gilbert
said. “I didn’t really like it. I
thought it was outside but it
defi nitely painted the black.
It was a good pitch for him.
I kept my eye on the ball and
made sure I didn’t swing at
anything that wasn’t actually a
strike. Holding up on that 3-2
pitch was really hard.”

McNary’s girls tennis team
earned its fi rst win of the sea-
son on Tuesday, April 4.
Playing at Courthouse in
Salem, the Lady Celts won
two matches in third set tie-
breakers to defeat McKay 6-1.
McNary senior Dianna
Cervantes lost her fi rst set,
3-6, at No. 3 singles, but came
back to win the second set 7-6
and then the tiebreaker.
At 2 doubles, sophomores
Sofi a Zielinski and Natalie
Gonzalez also dropped their
fi rst set, 2-6, before storming
back to take the second 7-5
and win the tiebreaker.
McNary senior Mireille
ing three earned runs. The
defense, which fi nished with
four errors, didn’t do him any
favors.
“Our defense, we didn’t
start very well,” Keeker said. “I
was questioning whether we
were really ready to play be-
cause we’d been pretty good
defensively all year long and
now we’ve had two games in a
row where defensively we put
ourselves in a hole and our
backs were against the wall to
start the game.”
Carl Rumbaugh and Geist
got the fi nal six outs for the
Celtics, who evened the series
with West Albany, after falling
on the road 5-4 the night be-
fore.
“I didn’t want to repeat last
night,” Gilbert said.

Martinez and sophomore Tay-
lor Walker easily won their
fi rst set, 6-2, at 1 doubles and
were able to hold on to cap-
ture the second, 7-6.
The No. 1 singles match
was never in doubt as Mc-
Nary junior Hannah Childress
dominated 6-0, 6-0. Junior
Katherine Perez also won in
straight sets at 2 singles, 6-4,
6-0.
The Lady Celts fi nal point
came at 3 doubles, where
sophomores Lilia Hawes and
McKenna Sieg won 6-3, 6-0.
Clarissa Giron won McK-
ay’s only match, 6-0, 6-3, at
No. 4 singles.
Tied 6-3, 3-6, McNary ju-
nior Joyce Yu and sophomore
Trisha Tan weren’t able to fi n-
ish at 4 doubles due to time
constraints with the tennis fa-
cility.
The Lady Celts also battled
against Sprague on Thursday,
April 6 before falling 7-1 at
home.
Childress scored McNary’s
only point, winning 6-1, 6-1
at No.1 singles.
Two singles matches went
into three sets. Perez won the
fi rst set 7-6 before losing 3-6
and 0-6.
Cervantes dropped her fi rst
set 6-0 but came back to win
the second 7-5 before falling
in the third 4-6.
McNary’s boys tennis team
failed to get its fi rst victory of
the season last week.
After losing to McKay 8-0
on Tuesday, the Celts fell at
Sprague 7-1 on Thursday.
While McNary didn’t win
more than two games in a
set against McKay, the Celt-
ics showed more fi ght versus
Sprague.
Sophomore Alfredo Vil-
larreal won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3
singles.
At 1 singles, Carlos Flores
was able win the second set
6-0 to force a third but came

while the boys host the Bull-
dogs at 4 p.m.
Golfers battle against best
of Greater Valley Conference
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
Playing on its home course
wasn’t enough for the Mc-
Nary girls golf team to rise to
the top of the Greater Valley
Conference.
South Salem continued its
dominance, shooting 384 to
win its third league tourna-
ment of the year.
The Lady Saxons were led
by Ellie Slama, 2016 Oregon
Junior Golfer of the Year, who
carded a 73 for low medalist
on Monday, April 10 at Mc-
Nary Golf Club.
Her teammate, Ashley Zhu,
fi nished second with a 78.
Sprague (410) and West Al-
bany (425) took second and
third.
The Lady Celts shot 513 to
place seventh.
Hannah Elliot’s 107 led the
way, followed by Juralee Sto-
ver, who carded a 117, and
Emma John, who shot 135.
Baily True completed the
scoring with a 154.
“We’re young and golf is a
tough sport,” McNary coach
Mike McDowell said. “You
can’t get better over night.”
On the same day, McNary’s
boys shot 340 to fi nish second
to West Salem’s 310 at Salem
Golf Club.
Celtic Teegan Papke carded
a 75, fi nishing only one stroke
behind low medalist Andrew
Eyre of West Salem.

Matt Langenwalter carded an
86 for McNary.
Casey Potmesil added a 94.
Joel Dutcher missed the
tournament with a back in-
jury.

teams are back in action on
Monday, April 17.
The Celts travel to Quail
Valley Golf Course in Banks
while the girls are playing at
