Guidelines for meeting all students’
needs were approved at a special Salem-
Keizer School Board meeting Tuesday,
March 21.
The guidelines, known as the Equity
Lens, involve board attention to the ef-
fects of resource allocation, program de-
velopment, and support systems. They are
designed to assure that decisions provide
for each student’s needs.
The board committed itself to not let-
ting characteristics such as race, national
origin, religion, disability, economic cir-
cumstance, mobility, native language, sex-
ual orientation, gender identity, or level of
profi ciency on entering a school predict
or predetermine success.
Changes in resource allocation, design
and implementation of policies, and pro-
grams will be considered in light of equi-
table outcomes.
The City of Keizer is
looking for volunteers to
serve on the following com-
mittees.
• The Keizer Points of In-
terest Committee identifi es,
authenticates, and memori-
alizes sites of interest located
in the Keizer area. Sites to be
identifi ed may be of the his-
torical, geographical, botani-
cal, or unusual. The Com-
mittee meets monthly on the
fourth Thursday at 6 p.m.
• The Mid-Valley Com-
munity Development Part-
nership identifi es regional
community
development
priorities and facilitates re-
gional, intergovernmental
coordination of develop-
ment initiatives. It meets
once a year at the Council
of Governments building in
downtown Salem.
• The Festival Advisory
Board serves in an advisory
role to the City of Keizer by
researching the feasibility for
developing venues for events
and festivals, streamlining

events in the coming weeks.

will host a town hall Friday,

The event will be at the
Keizer Fire District com-

Road N.E.
Post said there are no spe-
cifi c topics on the slate, but he
will be taking questions and
talking about opening weeks
of the Oregon Legislature’s
2017 session.
Post represents the com-
munities of Keizer, St. Paul
and Newberg in the Oregon
House. He currently serves
on the House Judiciary Com-
mittee, the House Econom-
ic Development and Trade
Committee and the Veterans
and Emergency Preparedness
Committee.

Keizer’s
Community
Emergency Response Team
(CERT) will offer a training
course which includes two
weekends beginning in April.
The four-class course will
run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Saturday, April 8, Sunday, April
9, Saturday, April 22 and Sun-
day, April 30. All classes will be
held in the community room
at the Keizer Fire District at
661 Chemawa Rd. N.E. Stu-
dents must attend all four of
the classes in the course.
The course is free, and is
appropriate for ages 14 and
up. There are no required
books or hidden fees, every-
thing you need will be pro-
vided for you. There is no
requirement that you join a
CERT Team upon course
completion.
During the course attend-
ees will learn about risk fac-
tors and natural hazards both
locally and across Oregon.
They will also discover many
ways they can help the com-
munity both prepare for, and
recover from, natural disasters.
The course modules will in-

The committee consists of the seven
board members and seven people from
the community. The chair and vice chair
positions have traditionally alternated be-
tween board and community members.
The next budget committee meeting
will be April 25, when Superintendent
Christy Perry will deliver the budget
message. There will be a question-and-
answer session without public testimony
May 9, and public testimony is scheduled
for May 22 and 23. The committee is
scheduled to deliberate the budget May
24 and 25 and make its recommenda-
tion May 25. All meetings will be at the
Support Services Center, 2575 Commer-
cial St. SE in Salem, at 6 p.m. except the
question-and-answer session, which will
be at 7 p.m.
Board approval of the budget is ex-
pected to be at the board’s regular June
meeting.

Also at the special meeting, the board
approved recommendations by the Citi-
zens Facilities Task Force on seismic pre-
paredness. Michael Wolfe, district chief
operating offi cer, told the board the task
force estimated that $56 million would be
the cost of replacing buildings considered
to be of very high risk in the event of
an earthquake of very high magnitude,
and that the total cost for very high-risk
buildings and high-risk buildings has
been projected at $151 million.
The board then heard Jay Remy, dis-
trict communications director, discuss the
process of a feasibility study for a general
obligation bond to prepare for such an
earthquake.

Dewey Thorsett chair and Rick Kimball
vice chair for 2017-18.

for the annual conference of

Association.
