Isabella Heath, left, and Abby Smith, teammates since kindergarten, both signed to play soccer
at Chemeketa Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in the McNary library.
McNary teammates
going to Chemeketa

When Isabella Heath
picked up her national let-
ter of intent and Chemeketa
Community College wom-
en’s soccer coach Sara Landis
asked the McNary senior if
she recommended any play-
ers, one immediately came to
mind.
And on Feb. 22 in the Mc-
Nary library, Heath and Abby
Smith, teammates since they
were kindergarteners playing
at Keizer Soccer Club, signed

with Chemeketa.
Along with playing at KSC
and McNary, the two were
also on the same team at Cap-
ital Futbol Club.
“We’ve literally grown up
together and we’ve been on
the same team forever,” Heath
said. “We’ve always played
together. It’s really crazy that
we’re going to play in college
together. I didn’t think that
would happen.”
Heath and Smith will also
join two former McNary
teammates—Michaela San-
chez and Janie Jarmin.
“It’s actually really a relief
because I kind of felt like I was
done with soccer after our se-
nior year and now it’s going
to be really fun because I get
to play with Bella,” Smith said.
“We get to keep playing
together for at least two years
and then I get to see Michaela
and Janie again. I also get to
play with some girls that I
played against in our confer-
ence. It will be really fun. I’m
excited.”
Heath got in touch with
Landis after the coach attend-
ed one of McNary’s games
this season.
Lady Celts head coach
AJ Nash said both girls have
been leaders on the team the
past three seasons, Heath in
the midfi eld and Smith on
defense, where she was First
Team All-League.
“Isabella has been a cor-
nerstone to our attack for the
last three years,” Nash said.
“She’s been the glue that
keeps them together and
she’s been an integral piece to
the attack in the way Sticky
(Smith) has been to the de-
fense. If you don’t score goals
you don’t win games and if
you get scored on you lose
games and these two repre-
sent both ends of that spec-
trum. They’ve been leaders on
this team since their sopho-
more year. We’re going to miss
them.”
After games, Heath consis-
tently received the Lady Celts
award for composure.
“She was the one that
when the pressure was on
and everything was tense, she
would step up,” Nash said.
Smith led McNary in a
big win over Gresham that
ultimately got the Lady Celts
into the playoffs.
“Probably the turning
point for our season last year
is when we beat Gresham,”
Nash said.
“That put us up in the
RPI. Specifi cally in that game
Abby was recognized by her
team as four or fi ve times be-
ing that last person that made
that big play to stop a goal to
secure that victory.”
Both Heath and Smith said
they’ll also miss McNary.
“It’s really sad leaving this
year,” Heath said. “Hopefully
I’ll be able to play with them
again in the future sometime.
McNary was a really good ex-
perience and I learned a lot.”
After Chemeketa, both
Heath and Smith said they’d
like to attend Oregon State
University.
“I really want to go to
OSU and hopefully play for
that team, too,” Heath said.
“I heard that playing for
Chemeketa’s team you get a
lot of opportunities for their
coaches to watch you play.”
