Yaquina Bay Bonanza
by G.I. Wilson
John’s excitement is infec-
tious as he eases the boat away
from the dock at Newport’s
Yaquina Bay.
“This is going to be a day
of quality and quantity,” he
whispers above the purr of
the 15-horse outboard.
We are equipped with gear
needed to spend a day har-
vesting the bounty of the es-
tuary.
It is one of those treasured
days to be on the Oregon
coast in February, a crisp 50
degrees, puffy white clouds
against a backdrop of blue.
Most important, no winds.
There is something about
the assortment of odors and
sounds of a bay/harbor that
arouse something special in a
man’s soul.
John’s master plan: First, we
dump in our three crab pots.
“We will let the pots ‘soak’
while we do the rest of our
things,” he explains. John loves
seafood. When he goes after
a species, he becomes a real
predator.
It’s low tide, so we will run
up the bay a short distance to
a sandy beach and rake cockle
clams.
“Cockles are about the size
of a baseball and are only an
inch or so below the surface
of the sand,” John explains.
“You can usually see the little
mounds,” he adds. “Just rake
‘em up.”
We are the only ones on
the beach. We have our limits
of nice cockles in 30 minutes.
Next is pump sand shrimp
for bait. I have never pumped
sand shrimp before, I have al-
ways bought them for steel-
head bait.
There are hundreds of
tiny shrimp holes in the
sand. John’s pump is a simple
plunger type made out of
PVC pipe. He pumps and I
grab the tricky little critters.
After pumping about a gal-
lon or so of shrimp, we head
back down the bay toward the
bridge to fi sh for pile perch.
To my surprise, there sits
The Olympic, the drag boat
my son works on, moored at
the dock. As our luck would
have it, son Gary is out work-
ing on the deck.
We pull along side and hail
him. He is as surprised as we
are to see each other.
“What are you guys up to?”
he asks. “Headed down under
the bridge to catch some pile
perch,” I yell back.
“Wait a minute,” he an-
swers, as he disappears below
deck.
In a couple of minutes he
reappears with two nice ling-
cod of 7-8 pounds.
To our surprise he drops
them into our boat. “There,
you have a good start.” He
adds with a chuckle, “Don’t
worry, we’ve got close to
4,000 pounds in here. Just
came in from a great trip.”
Fishing for pile perch un-
der the bridge is a blast. The
bottom has to be a jungle of
various objects that are non-
forgiving on fi shing gear.
John comes prepared with
a container of used spark
plugs for sinkers.
He patiently shows me
how to rig up. “Spark plug as
a dropper, two hooks up the
line, a piece of shrimp on each
hook, and let it straight down.
Get snagged up, break it off,
start over.” Several times we
have a perch on each hook.
Some of them are 3-4 pounds.
For the next hour or so
we have a blast--hooking
fi sh, losing fi sh. Several times
we hook something big that
just heads for the ocean and
we have to break them off or
loose all our line. Was it a big
ling or maybe a cabazon?
We do a pretty good job of
decorating the area with spark
plugs and broken hooks.
We get our limits of perch
and we are ready to pull crab
traps.
Crabbing isn’t too good
but we wind up with 13-14
keepers.
Then comes the experi-
ence of the day. We are headed
for the dock when two state
troopers pull along side to
check us.
After the usual pleasantries,
and observing our assortment
of gear, “See the rakes, been
after cockles?” We hold up
our buckets for examination.
“Crabbing too?” We hand
over the container of crabs.
“And fi shing?” John lifts
the heavy gunny sack of fi sh,
including the lings. Both of-
fi cers take a wide-eyed second
look.
“Where did you get those?”
“Right down there, under
the bridge.” John responds
with his best poker face.
One offi cer looks at the
other. “Holy smoke, I’m not
going with you anymore. I’m
going with these guys.”
Februarys have come and
gone since that memorable
day. Those offi cers have prob-
ably retired by now. But, all
those critters are still there
in the Yaquina, waiting to be
caught.
McNary bowlers
going to state
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
What started with just
three bowlers, junior Aneeka
Stephen and two sopho-
mores, Mimi Garza and Cas-
sidy Steckman, blossomed
into a district championship
for McNary High School.
With the addition of sisters
Cecilia and Natalia Valle mid-
way through the season, the
Lady Celts defeated McKay
on Sunday, Jan. 22 at AMF
Firebird Lanes in Salem to
win the district crown.
“They didn’t have a lot
of experience and won dis-
trict,” said Dan Kaplan, who
coaches the McNary boys.
“That shows (girls coach)
Kathy (Kaplan) is an amazing
coach.”
With the victory, the Mc-
Nary girls qualifi ed to com-
pete against 15 other teams in
the state high school tourna-
ment on Saturday, Feb. 25 and
Sunday, Feb. 26 at KingPin’s
in Portland.
McNary’s boys team also
qualifi ed for the state compe-
tition by fi nishing third in the
district behind McKay and
Silverton.
The Celtics team includes
Nick Blythe, Tim Kiser, Der-
rick Lucas, Adam Teal, Lay-
ton Thurlow, Konnor Sjullie,
Garrett Hughes and Chandler
Gregory.
The boys will also com-
pete against 15 other teams at
KingPin’s in Portland.
