GIRLS: Celts seek scorer
(Continued from Page 10)
McNary trailed just 11-9
with 2:20 remaining in the
fi rst quarter before the Lady
Titans scored nine straight,
which included going 6-for-6
from the free throw line.
A basket by McNary junior
Paige Downer just before the
end of the fi rst quarter got the
Lady Celts within 20-11.
Despite her two fouls,
Doutt started the second
quarter, even continuing to
guard West Salem’s leading
scorer—Delaney Henery.
“Defensively, obviously we
need Kailey in the game at all
times,” Handley said. “Some of
that’s (fouling) not on her. We
didn’t help on the backside so
every time that she drove, she
felt the need to try to stay in
front and do everything she
could because if she didn’t no-
body was there. It was a team
issue as well.”
With Hunter sitting out
the entire second quarter,
Doutt was also forced to lead
on the offensive end, scoring
fi ve points in the period be-
fore receiving her third foul
and going to the bench herself
with 1:47 remaining in the
fi rst half.
“Everybody is always look-
ing to Sydney. Everybody
is always looking to Kailey,”
Handley said. “Unfortunate-
ly, even when they’re not in,
they’re still looking for them
and it just doesn’t work that
way. We sort of fi gured out in
the second quarter. We started
getting a little more aggres-
sive.”
McNary sophomore guard
Anita Lao came off the bench
to score on back-to-back pos-
sessions to get the Lady Celts
within 29-23 with 2:30 re-
maining in the fi rst half. Lao
was then rewarded by starting
the second half.
“I thought Anita did a great
job stepping up for us,” Hand-
ley said. “She was the one girl
who was playing the passing
lanes and sparked us a little bit
on offense and was aggressive.”
In the fi rst half alone, the
two teams combined to shoot
37 free throws. McNary was
10-for-15 from the line while
West Salem went 16-for-22.
Jaylene Montano went
4-for-4 in the fi nal minute but
the Lady Celts trailed 36-27 at
halftime.
Lao knocked down a
3-pointer to get the Lady
Celts within 38-33 with six
minutes to go in the third
quarter. Downer then made
a basket at the 2:38 mark to
make the score 41-37 but Mc-
Nary couldn’t get any closer
to West Salem.
Even sitting out an entire
quarter and fouling out with
53 seconds remaining in the
fourth, Hunter still led the
Lady Celts with 12 points.
Doutt and Lao both had eight.
Downer and Montano each
added seven.
“We’re still looking for any-
body to be willing to attack,”
Handley said. “And the big
part for us is confi dence and
the mentality I can be a scorer,
I can attack. Abby [Hawley]
has done it at times this year
but she’s only a sophomore
and that’s not always one you
want to rely on. Anita did it
a little bit for us tonight, but
again a sophomore.
“Jaylene’s had a couple of
games where she’s been really
confi dent and been willing
to attack and then we’ve had
other games where you don’t
know if she’s on the fl oor or
not. We’re just looking for
some leadership, somebody to
step up on the fl oor that’s not
a Hunter.”
Finding another consistent

closed the second half on a 6-0
run and trailed by only three
entering the fourth quarter.
Neitzel and Chandler Cavell
both went 1-for-2 from the
free throw line to get the Celt-
ics within a point but the Ti-
tans scored seven straight and
put away McNary by going
12-for-14 from the free throw
line in the fi nal 3:20.
“The biggest thing for us
is we just didn’t guard the ball
very well,” Kirch said. “Really
they beat us at what we try
to do at teams. We got in foul
trouble and then they beat us
at the free throw line late. We
kept some of their scorers from
scoring on the outside. We just
fouled way too much and they
were able to bleed the clock
out and hit some free throws
late and that was the differ-
ence.”
Goff and Cavell each had 13
points in the loss. Ismay added
10, six rebounds and six assists.
“Give credit to them (West
Salem) for doing a nice job and
switching up their defenses,”
Kirch said. “For whatever rea-
son occasionally a team has
a night like this where things
just never quite get going. I
thought we battled. I thought
we just uncharacteristically
played a little passive and that
let to a lower shooting per-
centage than we’re used to and
certainly more turnovers than
we’re accustomed to.”
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Mc-
Nary rebounded with a n 85-
62 win at McKay, holding the
Royal Scots 25 points below
their game average.
Celtics return home on Fri-
day, Jan. 13 at 7:15 p.m. against
McMinnville.
“Give them credit. I thought
they dictated the tempo of the
game a little bit more than we
wanted to. And we were just
never quite in rhythm.”
Despite struggling on the
offensive end, the Celtics only
trailed 22-18 at the half.
“It was probably the ugli-
est fi rst half that we’ve played,”
Kirch said. “Of all the games
we play, we may have two or
three halves like that all year.
We just happened to have two
of them tonight and not the
place you want to have it.”
Ismay opened the second
half with a layup to get within
22-20 but West Salem drained a
3-pointer and then stretched its
lead to 35-26 before McNary

McNary junior Kailey Doutt fi ghts through a West Salem double team in a 58-46 road loss on
Friday, Jan. 6.
Handley expected.
“It’s frustrating,” he said.
“We’re trying.”
But Handley made it clear
to his team that the season is
still young. The game at West
Salem was just the Lady Celts
third in the GVC and only
their second loss in league play.
“The message is still that
But leading 9-7 in the third
period, he was slammed to the
ground and pinned by Seth
De Leon.
“We’re going to grow from
that and we’ll be OK,” coach
Ebbs said. “Isaiah’s been here
before.”
Ebbs was proud of the guys
who hadn’t been here before,
like freshman Tyshawn Sang,
who given the option of wres-
tling defending conference
champion Brenton Reddy at
182 pounds or jumping up
to 195, chose to take on the
champ.
“How do you get upset
about that?” Ebbs said. “Good
for him. He’s got the right
kind of spirit. All we need is
time.”
Due to injuries, the latest
being senior Carlos Vincent,
McNary had six freshmen or
fi rst-time wrestlers in it’s line-
up at West Salem.

be proud of my young kids,”
Ebbs said. “They got expe-

should be in the lineup and
we’re putting freshmen in. If

“The good news is we’ve

if it comes out in February,
we’ll be fi ne.”
McNary traveled to New-

ished 1-2.
After falling to the host Ti-
gers 69-9 and then Cascade
57-16 in rounds one and two,
the Celtics defeated Century
42-35 to place seventh in the
eight-team tournament.
Burrows and Ebbs were
both 3-0.
McNary is scheduled to
compete in the Oregon Clas-
sic Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday,
