Vaughn easily won the 500 free in 5:26 and also had the fastest time in the 100 breast- stroke, fi nishing in 1:10.96. The Celtics also had the three fastest times in the 200 free as freshman Kyle Hooper won the event in 2:03.08, ju- nior Grant Biondi placed sec- ond in 2:03.77 and Dean took a distant third in 2:16.36. Lady Celts seek second scorer By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes SALEM—Still looking for a second scorer behind Sydney Hunter, the last thing McNary needed was the University of San Diego-bound senior to get in foul trouble. But with 1:42 remaining in the fi rst quarter, Hunter picked up her third foul and was forced to the bench. To make matters worse, Kailey Doutt, the reigning Greater Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, got her sec- ond foul just over three min- utes into the game. The foul trouble was too much for McNary to over- come as the Lady Celts lost at West Salem 58-46 on Friday, Jan. 6. “It’s on us if we don’t ad- just,” MHS head coach Der- rick Handley said. “The natural reaction as players on the fl oor are to turn and try to point the fi nger at somebody else but they (refer- ees) called it consistent. They were the same the entire time. We didn’t adjust to it. That’s on our players. That’s on our coaches. We tried to talk about that at halftime and we did a little bit better job in the sec- ond half as far as not fouling as much. You’ve got to fi nd the line between still being ag- gressive but not fouling. It was our fault. We didn’t make the change quick enough, obvi- ously.” Please see GIRLS, Page 11 Celtics score season-low 47 By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes SALEM—The game start- ed just like most of McNary’s. Celtics win the tip, Mat- thew Ismay bounces a perfect pass to an open Easton Neitzel, who scores an easy layup to give McNary a quick 2-0 lead. It ended much different- ly as the Celtics, who came into West Salem averaging 76 points per game and had hit at least 80 six times, were held to a season low in 56-47 loss. “Their zone slowed us down and we didn’t attack and look to score as much as we usually do,” McNary se- nior Cade Goff said. “They put some long guys up top and slowed our game down and we played more into their hands instead of how we play.” The Titans jumped out to a 15-4 lead as McNary didn’t score another fi eld goal af- ter Neitzel’s layup until Goff knocked down a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining in the fi rst quarter. The Celtics didn’t make a shot from the fl oor in the second quarter until the 5:32 mark when Goff hit another 3 to get McNary within 18-12. “We settled for some shots early where we could have probably been a little more aggressive getting to the rim,” McNary head coach Ryan Kirch said. By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes SALEM—McNary had a two-point lead through nine matches at West Salem. But the Titans won the fi - nal fi ve, including three by pin fall, to defeat the Celtics 51- 26 on Thursday, Jan. 5 in their fi rst Greater Valley Conference dual of the season. “As soon as we got done with 152, we were hitting the strength of their lineup,” Mc- Nary head coach Jason Ebbs said. “That was all of their tal- ent and all of their better guys. We knew that coming in. We knew that up by two at 160 was not going to be enough to ride that wave out.” After Noah Gatchet won by forfeit at 106 pounds to give the Celtics a 6-0 lead, West Salem won three match- es in a row, all by pin fall, to go ahead 18-6. At 132 pounds, Sean Bur- rows was able to end the streak by pinning Mason Meredith in the second period.
