However, the Bulldogs scored fi ve points in the fi nal 15 seconds, including a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead 26-22 at intermission. Playing a smaller lineup, McNary, led by Hunter and Kailey Doutt, opened the second half on a 10-0 run to go ahead 32-26 with 3:17 re- maining in the third quarter. Smith ended the run with a fi eld goal and added a 3-point- er to get West Albany within 34-30. Hunter then picked up her fourth foul with 1:18 left in the third. After the Bulldogs got with- in 34-32, Hawley knocked down another 3-pointer at the 1:02 mark but that was the last fi eld goal the Lady Celts would make. The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 45-39 lead with only 2:30 remaining. After Hunter made two free throws to get McNary within 41-45, Jaylene Mon- tano then forced a West Alba- ny turnover to give the Lady Celts a chance. However, MHS turned the ball right back over and weren’t able score the rest of the night. “There’s a lot of excuses we can make but ultimately they played harder,” Handley said. “Loose balls, they got them, Matthew Ismay then scored in the paint to put the Celtics ahead 58-56. West Albany quickly tied the game once again but a 3-point play by Martin with 3:21 remaining gave McNary the lead for good. “I’m pretty hyped,” said Harvey, who led McNary with 16 points. “We played good as a team. We had a slug- gish part but we came back fi ring. We kept our compo- sure and stayed strong.” The Celtics went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the fi nal 1:25 to put away the Bulldogs. Garvey and Goff each fi n- ished with 14 points. Ismay added 12 points, eight re- bounds and six assists. “In the long run, I think this was good for us,” Kirch said. “The fi nal three min- utes is winning time. As ter- rible as the fi rst 29 minutes were, I thought our mental toughness to be able to fi n- ish at the end of the game was a real positive thing. The last couple of years we’ve lost one game each year that we probably shouldn’t have and KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary senior Kelsey Koenig fi ghts for posession among a group of West Albany defenders. we didn’t. We didn’t rebound very well tonight. We didn’t shoot very well tonight. It was a combination of a lot of things. You’ve got to get them credit.” The Lady Celts were 4-for- 21 from behind the 3-point arc. “We struggled as a team just settling for outside jump shots,” Handley said. “We’re not a 3-point shooting team. For some reason today we thought we were. We weren’t aggressive with the dribble. We didn’t attack their zone. We didn’t look short corner ever and we had a lot of open- ings there.” Despite foul trouble, Hunt- er was able to post a double- double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Hawley and Doutt each had 10 points. The loss was the fi rst for McNary, who opened the season 3-0. “This is one, we’re going to show the fi lm, we’re going to learn from it,” Handley said. “Hopefully, it’s the last time we have to show fi lm like this. There’s a lot to learn. There’s a lot to learn from early games. I wish it wasn’t a league game. I wish it wasn’t a learning mo- ment in our fi rst league game. This was not quite how we were looking to kick it off this year.” The skid continued at home on Tuesday, Dec. 13 as the Lady Celts lost to Clacka- mas 63-51 in a non-league game. Hunter had 14 points and 17 rebounds. Doutt had 11 points and seven rebounds. Hawley added 10 points. I thought our seniors did a nice job of coming together, lead- ing vocally but also just going out and getting it done.” McNary improved to 2-0 in the GVC on Tuesday, Dec. 13 by dominating North Sa- lem on the road 74-36. Harvey led the Celtics with 14 points and fi ve re- bounds. Cavell had 14 points and Easton Neitzel added 11. Martin and Goff each had nine. The Celtics return home Friday, Dec. 16 to play Sprague at 7:15 p.m. Brayden Ebbs, who won the 138-pound Greater Valley Conference title and placed fourth in the state last season, lost by pin fall to Lane Stigall at 152 pounds. “The guy that Brayden wrestled has already signed with Division I Missouri,” coach Ebbs said. “He’s a phenomenal wrestler. They’re a great program. They do a good job. Our job right now is maybe not be able to beat them but to get our younger kids up to speed with them so in February we can compete with that team a little better than we did that night. Celtics also came up short against Cascade, 48-27. Killian Dato (138), Burrows and Ebbs all got pins. Gatchet won by forfeit. “For us that tournament was about getting our young kids on the mat,” coach Ebbs said. “It worked out well to wrestle a team like North Marion where we got all our returners some solid competitors. They got plenty of tests. They got challenged just fi ne. Every week we’ve just got to get tougher and better.” LET US PREPARE YOUR HOLIDAY DINNER Brined & Smoked Ham or Turkey ORDER BEFORE Monday, December 19 Call 503.689.1082 Downtown Salem 1210 State St 503.362.2194 North Salem 2505 Liberty St NE 503.689.1082 Thanks for voting us Best Barbecue – 8 years running Opens January 1
