Total eclipse event taking shape
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
Only one more box needs
to get checked on a permit for
an event planned around the
total solar eclipse that will pass
over Keizer in August 2017.
Organizers are still waiting
for approval of an evacuation
plan at Keizer Rapids Park be-
fore the fi nal permits can be
granted, but other elements
are falling into place.
The topic came up at the
Keizer Festivals Advisory
Board (KFAB) meeting Mon-
day, Nov. 28, with organizer
and KFAB board member
Sherrie Gottfried giving an
update.
“I’m still worried about
pulling it off and making it
successful. I’ve produced large
events in this community and
it takes a lot,” Gottfried said.
“But we are moving.”
Gottfried is coordinating
the event at the request of
the Keizer Parks Foundation,
which plans to turn Keizer
Rapids Park into a temporary
camping ground for eclipse
watchers the weekend before
the eclipse itself.
Spaces at state parks in the
path of the eclipse evaporat-
ed about an hour after being
made available, and the Keizer
Parks Foundation is hoping to
turn Keizer’s prime location
into a benefi t for the city’s
parks.
Early estimates suggest as
much as $26,000 could be
added to the city’s parks bud-
get as a one-time shot in the
arm.
However, Gottfried said
the event could cost as much
as $30,000 to pull off. Orga-
nizers, including Keizer City
Councilor Marlene Parsons,
are hoping to get sponsors and
the city to cover expenses.
“When we start discussing
the budget for next year, I’m
going to request that TOT
(transient occupancy tax) dol-
lars be used to offset the cost
of police and fi re district staff-
ing,” said Parsons. “That will
make a huge dent in the costs.”
Parsons is waiting for the
fi nal permit approval before

approaching other potential
sponsors.
Another hitch in the early
planning stages is securing
portable toilet rentals. Gott-
fried said other events, includ-
ing the Oregon State Fair,
which will begin later in the
same week as the eclipse, have
reserved the entire stock of lo-
cally-available portable toilets.
She’s reached out to vendors
in Portland and Eugene with
hopes of fi nding some.
In all, 117 spots will be
available for a mix of RV and
dry camping, but reservations
are not yet being taken. Costs
will be $75 per night for a dry
camping site and $150 a night
for an RV space. However,
only four-night reservations
will be available, resulting in
a total cost of $300 or $600,
respectively.
While the planning is still
ongoing, Gottfried said there
has been a side benefi t of the
work already completed.
“One of the purposes of
this committee getting to-
gether was creating structure
for planning events in Keizer.
We now have that in place for
Keizer Rapids Park,” she said.
