“It’s more about yourself
and your time. High school
is about having school pride.
I really love that.”
Returning for the girls
team is junior Sarah Eckert,
who fi nished third in the
100 butterfl y at the district
meet last season as well as
Haley Debban and Hannah
Corpe. Freshman Alyssa Gar-
vey should also give the Lady
Celts a spark.
“Our girls team is looking
pretty strong,” McNary head
coach Casey Lewin said. “We
have quite a bit of depth,
compared to the last couple
of years.”
Parker Dean and Jake
Wyer lead the McNary boys
team.
“I think we’re going to do
pretty well because we have
a lot of returning swimmers,”
said Dean who swims 100
breaststroke and 100 freestyle
for the Celtics.
Between the boys and girls
squads, McNary has about 50
kids in the program.
If the fi rst week of prac-
tice was any indicator, Lewin
is expecting strong seasons.
“The focus we’ve had in
the fi rst few practices is like
midseason form as far as
where we’re at mentally,” he
said. “This is the most moti-
vated group I’ve had. That’s
exciting. If we can just get
the work done in practice, it
will all come together.”
McNary’s fi rst home meet
is Thursday, Dec. 8 at 3:30
against McKay in the KROC
Center. The district meet is
Feb. 10-11 in McMinnville.

Thanks to strong middle
school programs at White-
aker and Claggett Creek, the
Celtics also have plenty of
young talent like freshman
Noah Gatchet and Katrina
Ortiz, who are battling at 106
pounds.
Coach Ebbs said sopho-
more Bowen Working “could
also make some noise.”
“We’re piggybacking off
the second year that we’ve
had middle school wrestling
so we’ve got some young
kids coming in that are pretty
confi dent, coming from good
programs at Whiteaker and
Claggett that do a good job
of producing kids,” coach
Ebbs said.
“We have a lot of young
kids this year. I think we’re
going to do some things that
nobody has been able to see
yet. I’m pretty excited about
what this is going to look
like for McNary, some kids
building confi dence, growing
up and catch some of those
other teams off guard. It’s a
young team that’s going to
surprise some people but in
a couple years if we contin-
ue to develop, could be very
good. We’ve got some good
building blocks to work with
right now. They’re very ex-
cited, happy to be here and
learning fast.”
As a team, the Celtics fi n-
ished second in the GVC last
season behind only Sprague.
“Sprague is going to be
loaded,” coach Ebbs said.
“They were young last year.
We like to pride ourselves
on making sure that Sprague
knows that we tested them,
that we come at them and I
don’t think at any time have
they said ever that we’re just
