“The reality is Sydney is
one of the hardest workers
I’ve ever had the opportunity
of coaching,” Handley said.
“She’s the best pure ath-
lete I’ve ever coached, there’s
no question, but she’s also the
kid that you don’t see behind
the door, she’s the one put-
ting up shots by herself. She’s
working extra hours in the
gym and she’s not doing that
because the crowd is going
to see it or the coaches want
to see it, she understands that
elite athletes have to put in
the work. What she’s getting
is deserved. She wasn’t just
born into it. She worked her

the game to seal a 30-27 vic-
tory.
“I think he (Van Voorhis)
matured quite a bit this year as
far as his body goes, especial-
ly,” Auvinen said. “In the past
he’s kind of been a track kid
playing football and this year
he became a football player.
He was really big for us offen-
sively. He put up huge num-
bers and helped us spread the
fi eld out.”
Quarterback Josiah Gil-

tone, not only how they treat
their teammates but the ex-
pectations they hold them-
selves to.
“I could never ask for a
better representative for our
program, for our school, for
our community. Her team-
mates would say the same
thing. San Diego is really
lucky to be getting her.”
San Diego plays in the
West Coast Conference with
the likes of Gonzaga, Saint
Mary’s and Santa Clara.

she is signing D-I today, it re-
ally shouldn’t be a surprise to
anybody who’s had the op-
portunity to coach with her,
to play with her or just to see
her perform.”
Hunter, who will be a
team captain for the third
time this season, is also a
leader.
“She’s very supportive of
her teammates,” Handley
said. “She’s the fi rst to criti-
cize herself. She understands
when she makes a mistake
and if I were to say that Syd-
ney had a fl aw, I would say
sometimes she’s too hard on
herself. She expects perfec-

there. As a head coach, that’s
a dream. That’s exactly what

Coburn said kids always ask
if they are his favorites but it’s
diffi cult to top the two teams
his daughters, Sarah and Katie,
played on in the late 90s.
“They were both on very
good teams,” Coburn said.
“I take every year one at a
time,” he said. “I know I have
a few more years of teaching
and as long as I’m teaching, I’ll
be coaching. It’s been a good
ride though. I’ve enjoyed ev-
ery minute of it. I feel very
fortunate to be in the city I’m
in because I get great kids and
great families to work with.
The city of Keizer is some-
thing special.”
“They didn’t lose any games
while they were here and hav-
ing all those kids at my house
as friends made them special
teams to be around.”
Coburn’s team went unde-
feated in league play this sea-
son, which has become a com-
mon occurrence at Whiteaker.
Coburn, who turns 60 this
month, doesn’t know how
much longer he’ll coach.
