Through SMART (Start
Making A Reader Today),
Jim Young read to children
at Cummings Elementary
School for 20 years.
After his death, Young is
making sure the program re-
mains strong.
Thanks to donations given
to a memorial fund at John
Knox Presbyterian Church,
Young’s widow, Roberta,
presented a $177 check to
Cummings Principal Martina
Mangan on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
“He read here and a couple
other grade schools as well,”
Roberta said.
“He just loved to work
with the kids. He enjoyed it.
It’s one-on-one. A lot of these
kids don’t have a parent to
read with them and he could
talk with them and it really
added to his day.”
Cummings has 11 students,
kindergarten through third
grade, in its SMART program.
“Typically the kids stay
with the same adult reader the
entire school year,” Mangan
said. “The teacher selects one
kid per class, K-3, and it’s typi-
cally the kids who need the
most individual attention. It’s
a really good program. They
get to build relationships.”
Adult volunteers read with
students once a week and if a
child attends every week for
a month, they get a book to
take home to start building
their own library. The money
raised in Young’s honor will
go towards the purchase of
those books.
