But they all came early as Tigard closed the fi rst half with 35 unanswered points and rolled to a 58-28 victory over the Celtics on Friday, Nov. 4. The Tigers rushed for 235 yards and passed for 186 in the fi rst half. McNary fi nished the game with 238 yards through the air but only six on the ground. “They came to play,” Mc- Nary senior Josiah Gilbert said of Tigard. “They were more physical than us. They stopped the run game. We were taking a beat- ing. That’s all in credit to them. We played our hearts out. We did what we could. They were ready for us and knew what they were going to do. They were a big physical football team with a big physical run- ning game.” The Tigers scored fi rst on defense as Aksel Thorsfeldt in- tercepted Gilbert deep in Mc- Nary territory and returned it for an easy touchdown to put Tigard ahead 7-0 less than a minute into the game. But the Celtics quickly re- covered. On the 11th play of an 85- yard scoring drive, Gilbert and Brendan Van Voorhis connect- ed for a 33-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:51 remaining in the fi rst quarter. Gus, Sticky voted All-GVC First Team By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes When asked why they were voted all-league First Team by the Greater Valley Conference coaches, McNary seniors Abi- gail “Sticky” Smith and Gus- tavo Villalvazo both pointed to their teammates. “It’s kind of hard for me to believe I got First Team be- cause I get so much help from the people around me,” Smith said. “Katelyn Tallon, she’s an amazing stopper. She makes my job easier on the fi eld. I feel like part of me winning First Team is a lot of the work that she’s done on the fi eld as well. And my outside defend- ers really made me stand out.” Tallon was an honorable mention selection along with Lady Celts Natalia Gonza- lez, Abigail Hawley and Jessy Shore. Kayla Evans was voted on to the Second Team. Villalvazo credited his teammates for helping him return from a torn ACL the previous season. “Honestly, I was scared,” he said. “I’m one of those players that usually goes all out but not trying to hurt a person. And this year pretty much the whole time I was just thinking about my knee and was pret- ty slow out on the fi eld. The guys always pushed me to my limits in every practice, warm ups, everyday. They made me a better person inside and out- side the fi eld. It was my goal but it was also the team’s goal to have people on the First Team and with their help I got there. Unfortunately, I was the only one but I feel like other players could have been there as well.” Bhavdeep Bains, Bryan Keo, Jose Vasquez and Javier Zepeda all made honorable mention. Both Smith and Villalvazo said senior night was one of their favorite memories of the season. On Oct. 20, the Lady Celts tied South Salem 1-1 with a goal by Hawley in the 67th minute, which was enough to get McNary a play-in game. “When Abbie Hawley scored that goal against South (Salem) on senior night, I can’t even explain how amazing that felt,” Smith said. The Lady Celts then shut out Newberg 1-0 to make the playoffs for the fi rst time since 2009. “It was a really big deal,” Smith said. “It was like a gift being a senior and being able to make the playoffs for the fi rst time in a few years at Mc- Nary. It meant that we got to play longer together, we got to have that hope that we were gonna go really far and then we didn’t but it was really ex- citing.” The Celtics defeated North Salem 4-1 in their last regular season home game. Claggett wins football, Whiteaker takes volleyball Maltin leads big victoly Wolvelines sweep 4-0 By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Playing under the lights at McNary High School, the varsity football game between Claggett Creek and Whiteaker middle schools was back-and- forth for much of the fi rst half. But then Claggett Creek running back Ethan Martin busted it wide open. Martin had three touch- downs in the game, including one as time expired in the fi rst half, to lead the Panthers to a 66-20 victory over their Keiz- er rival on Wednesday, Nov. 2. CCMS never trailed, scor- ing its fi rst touchdown on a 49-yard pass from quarterback Jack McCarty to Elijha De- voursney. The Panthers failed to convert the two-point at- tempt but led 6-0 with 2:49 remaining in the fi rst quarter. Whiteaker only needed By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Whiteaker Middle School’s varsity volleyball team put an exclamation point on their undefeated league season, topping Keizer rival Claggett Creek 4-1 (25-10, 20-25, 25- 5, 25-13, 15-5) on Tuesday, Nov. 1. “I think they played well,” Whiteaker head coach Scott Coburn said. “They had fun being at McNary and they raised their level of play. he second set, the Claggett girls stepped up and competed well but we hit a lot of balls out. That happens. I just told them you’re playing good volleyball, don’t worry about it. They came back and played well af- ter that.” Coburn said Taylor Ebbs, Michelle Gee and Jazmin Zepeda led the effort. The Wolverines too missed their two-point try. Claggett Creek marched back down the fi eld and on the 10th play of a 57-yard drive, Dyami Rios powered his way into the end zone from the 1-yard line. Rios also converted the two-point at- tempt to give the Panthers a 14-6 lead early in the second Please see MIDDLE, Page 11 KEIZERTIMES/Delek Wiley Emelson Woomel hits the ball ovel the net fol Whiteakel in a 4-1 victoly ovel Claggett Cleek on Tuesday, Nov. 1. “Taylor Ebbs was hitting the ball extremely hard and well,” Coburn said. “She was serving rockets during the fi rst game.
