Whiteaker no match for
undefeated Crossler
Killing it
Submitted by Scott Coburn
Carol Biamont’s Whiteaker Middle School volleyball team is 4-0 this season. The overall program,
which has four teams, are a combined 16-1 after three of the squads defeated Crossler last week.
Playing shorthanded due
to injury, the Wolverines var-
sity team fell 50-0 last week
to Crossler in a game that was
decided early on.
The loss drops Whiteaker
to 3-2 on the season, with
three games remaining.
Crossler is the lone un-
defeated team in the league,
having defeated all fi ve of its
opponents by wide margins.
“Crossler has beaten ev-
eryone pretty easily,” White-
aker head coach Tom Lar-
imer said. “They are big, fast,
strong, well coached, and play
with extreme confi dence. We
didn’t give our best effort to-
day, but it was clear that the
better and more deserving
team won.”
Crossler scored on the fi rst
play from scrimmage on a
reverse. Following the ensu-
ing kickoff, Whiteaker drove
nearly the length of the fi eld,
using nearly seven minutes
of clock, but Crossler fi nally
forced a turnover on downs
on its own 18-yard line.
On the very next play, the
Crossler running back was hit
at the line by two Whiteaker
defenders, but shook off both
tacklers and went 82 yards for
the score.
“That put our kids on their
heels and we simply did not
respond well after that play,”
Larimer said.
Whiteaker was able to
move the ball on the ground,
but its defense was consistent-
ly overwhelmed by a superior
Crossler squad.
Larimer went on to say
that his team has been smaller
than every opponent this sea-
son, and that the Wolverines
must be aggressive and dis-
ciplined to make up for size
and speed.
“Crossler was the aggres-
sor today and once we got on
our heels it was tough for our
kids to stay disciplined,” Lar-
imer said. “Today was not our
best effort. We can and will do
better.”
Griffi n Hubbard, in his
fi rst game experience at run-
ning back, rushed nine times
for 42 yards, and Quentin Ca-
menisch added 30 yards on 11
carries. Ethan Schurr logged
his fi rst two receptions of the
season, and Isaac Evarts had
four solo tackles.

“It was another roller
coaster day,” Myers said. “We
had peaks and valleys, where
we want to get on that plateau.
We were competitive with all
those teams all day.”
Hunter had 44 kills, 12 digs,
three aces and three blocks on
the day.
Diede had 18 kills and six
blocks.
Williams added 17 kills and
three blocks. Ewert had 10
blocks and nine kills. Gabby
Shepherd had 47 assists and
Jaylene Montano had 25 digs.
Ask Mr. Trash
Q. How do I keep my trash from blowing
in the wind?
A. Bagging loose trash and closing the cart lid will help prevent
wind related issues, keep pets and crows from spreading the waste,
and will even help with cart cleanliness. It’s also a good idea to roll
shredded paper up into a paper sack before placing it in your blue
cart for recycling. Please help us keep your neighborhood clean!

But those trends didn’t
continue into the fourth game.
Samantha Van Voorhis, the
team’s starting setter, missed
the match with a back injury.
Outside hitter Valerie Diede,
who has also been limited
with a groin injury, had four
kills and four blocks.
Sophomores Kara Thomas
and Caiya Ewert had six and
three blocks, respectively.
Myers noted the seniors
have been a “tremendous”
group to work with during his
fi rst season at McNary.
“They’ve done everything
I’ve asked of them,” he said.
“They come everyday to
work hard and they’ve bought
in to a new system. They are
busting their butts to do their
best.”
