Whiteaker volleyball off to hot start
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
Whiteaker Middle School’s
volleyball teams are off to a
blazing start.
After three weeks of match-
es, the four teams are a com-
bined 13-1 in league play.
“We have always spent a
lot of time focusing on the
fundamentals of the game,”
said Whiteaker physical edu-
cation teacher Scott Coburn,
who coaches the varsity team,
which is 4-0 in league.
“We try to teach volleyball
as it needs to be in order to
make the kids successful at the
next level. We teach the sys-
tems of volleyball, we expect a
pass, set and hit every time, and
set our overall expectations
very high. Having been here
for 25 years I have been able
to get solid coaches, have set
the bar high and have a great
tradition of excellence.”
Along with an unblemished
league record, Coburn’s squad
also went 3-1 in a tournament
at the Boys and Girls Club of
Corvallis, losing in the semifi -
nals on Saturday, Oct. 1.
The other three teams are
coached by Whiteaker teach-
ers Carol Biamont, Amber
Sweeney and Carley Parks.
“Since I was a high school
head coach and club coach for
several years I know what is
needed to succeed at the next
level,” Coburn said. “We try to
run our program to that level.
McNary’s coaches have been
supportive of us. We meet and
talk so that we are sure we all
teach the things the same. It
began with coach Dan Bor-
resen 25 years ago and contin-
ues with coach Bruce Myers
today.”
There are 54 eighth graders
in the middle school program.
On the varsity roster are
Grace Melting, Chloe Shep-
herd, Madison Alt, Camille
Young, Emma Stephen, Eli-
ana Dean, Lea Doutt, Taylor
Ebbs, Jazmin Zepeda, Emerson
Woomer, Kate Ronning and
Michelle Gee.
“We also simply get great
kids,” Coburn said. “Keizer
loves its youth sports and our
kids come in with a solid ath-
letic background. We then take
that and teach volleyball.”
The varsity team’s next
home match is Wednesday,
Oct. 19 against Leslie at 4:15
p.m. They host Claggett Creek
on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 4:45 p.m.
Panthers win big
Claggett Creek Middle
School’s varsity football team
extended its winning streak to
three games with a 66-12 win
over Leslie on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
Ethan Martin led Claggett
with fi ve touchdowns, Dyami
Rios had two and Elijah
Devoursney also got into the
end zone. Jack McCarty threw
four touchdowns in the win.
On defense, Kyle Grass had an
interception and Michael Sly
recovered a fumble.
“Overall things are starting
to fi re on all cylinders for our
boys,” head coach Aaron Carr
said.
Whiteaker
Whiteaker Middle School’s
varsity football squad lost for the
fi rst time this season, dropping a
home game 16-6 to Waldo on
Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Whiteaker took the opening
kick and behind tough running
by Ian Martin, drove nearly
the length of the fi eld before
being stopped on downs at the
Waldo 10-yard line. Martin,
Whiteaker’s leading rusher, was
lost for the game at that point
with a hamstring strain.
“Losing Ian really hurt us,”

said Larimer. “Because with
weather like this (rain) we
needed Ian to be able to run
effectively between the tackles.”
After a scoreless fi rst quarter,
Waldo took an 8-0 lead when
it converted a fourth-and-12
with a 25-yard pass over the
Wolverine secondary.
Just before half, Whiteaker
scored to make the score 8-6.
After Eric Sorenson recovered
a fumble in Waldo territory, a
completion from quarterback
Rian Canini to Cameron
Parks and a weaving run by
Quentin Camenisch put the
ball inside the Waldo 10 On
fourth and goal from the 1-yard
line, Camenisch followed right
tackle Coleman Young into the
end zone for the score.
“Our offensive coordinator
[Marcus Larimer] called a time
out and challenged Coleman to
clear a path,” Thomas Larimer
said. “Everyone knew we were
running behind him, but it
didn’t matter. He took about
three big, tough, D-linemen
into the end zone with him, and
Q made a great read to the right
hole for the score.”
Waldo scored again early
in the fourth quarter for what
would be the fi nal margin.
Canini was 11 for 20
passing for 150 yards an d an
interception, connecting seven
times with Nate Meithof for
112 yards. Martin rushed for
50 yards and Camenisch had 27
yards and a touchdown.
Young led the defense with
nine tackles, including three
for loss, and Griffi n Hubbard
and Isaac Evarts each had eight
takedowns.
