Bruce Myers was at a loss for
words after a 3-1 loss to West
Albany at home on Thursday,
Oct. 6.
One word he could come
up with was “frustrated.”
After winning the first set
25-20 but narrowly dropping
the second 22-25, the Lady
Celts were dominated by the
visiting Bulldogs in the third
and fourth games, 25-14 and
25-13 to clinch the match.
“We just lost it and we
couldn’t get it back,” Myers
said. “They didn’t do anything
differently. Our serve receive
just went in the tank and
when that happens you’re in
scramble mode instead of at-
tack mode. We just couldn’t
pass the ball. In the first set we
were passing great.”
The first game had four
lead changes and five ties be-
fore McNary scored the last
five points, which included an
ace by Sofia Zielinski and a
kill by Sydney Hunter, to put
away West Albany.
The second set was again
back and forth. But tied 21-
21, the Bulldogs won four of
the next five points to even
the match, and the Lady Celts
were never the same.

Williams, who also had a 41-
yard catch on the winning
drive, stepped up and made a
big play.
“Johnny is a playmaker,”
Auvinen said. “He does it in
practice. We’ve been waiting
for him to step up at game
time. He picked a good time
to do it.”

McNary sophomore Kara Thomas digs the ball during the irst
set of the Lady Celts 3-1 loss to West Albany.
“We were right there,” My-
ers said. “Unfortunately, we
just went into one of those
funks.”
McNary wasn’t at full
strength. Jaylene Montano,
senior libero, was out after
rolling her ankle, and Sam
Van Voorhis, junior setter, also
missed the match with a back
injury. Valerie Diede, a junior
outside hitter, then exited in
the third set with a pulled
groin.
In their absence, Katelyn
Kolb got the start at setter and
finished with 23 assists and
seven digs.
At libero, Sophia Salinas
led the team with 13 digs and
three aces.
Hunter had 15 kills, 12 digs
and two blocks. Shaylee Wil-
liams was second on the team
with six kills and added seven
digs and two blocks. Gabby
Shepherd also chipped in with
seven digs and three aces.
The Lady Celts defeated
Forest Grove 3-0 (25-17, 25-
18, 25-20) earlier in the day.
Williams led the McNary
attack with 17 kills. Hunter
had 10 kills and six blocks.
Kolb had 28 assists and three
aces. Salinas chipped in with
nine digs. Diede had five kills.
The Lady Celts fell at
Sprague 3-0 on Monday, Oct.
10.
After narrow 21-25 and
26-28 losses, the third set
wasn’t as close as the Olym-
pians convincingly put away
McNary 25-11.
Hunter had 11 kills and
seven digs in the loss. Williams
had seven kills.
With 1:09 remaining, Mc-
Minnville had a chance to tie
the game or even take the lead.
But after getting into Celtic
territory, quarterback Wy-
att Smith, being pressured by
linebacker Kolby Barker and
safety Junior Walling, threw an
interception to Van Voorhis at
the McNary 17-yard line.
“We got good penetra-
tion on that play,” Van Voorhis
said. “Honestly, I give credit
on that interception to the
D-line. They forced the ball
to come out quicker. He’s
a good quarterback. If he
wasn’t forced to get the ball
out quicker, it would prob-
ably be on the money and it
would have been a harder play.
At first I was going to try to
break up the pass and then I
got a pretty good jump on it
and I just laid out for it and
got the ball in my hands.”
The interception wasn’t
Van Voorhis first game-chang-
ing play of the night.
After the Grizzlies expand-
ed their lead to 20-7 with 5:14
remaining in the second quar-
ter, McNary answered with a
10-play, 89-yard drive, capped

coach
Miguel Camarena played ev-
eryone on his roster, including
all three goalkeepers, trying
to find an answer for slowing
down McKay.
There wasn’t one as the
Celtics fell 8-0 on Monday,
Oct. 10 at home in their most
lopsided loss in the last three
seasons.
“I can’t really explain what
happened tonight,” Camarena
said. “We’ll learn from this.
We have to work because it’s
not normal to allow this many
goals. We’ll have to figure it
out. We’re still making mis-
takes. It’s my job to fix it.”
The Scots scored three
goals in the first 20 minutes
before senior Javier Zepeda
put McNary’s first shot on
goal, which was easily saved by
the McKay goalkeeper.
The Celtics best chance to
get back in the game came
on two corner kicks in the
25 th minute. The first, a shot
by Bhavdeep Bains was saved.
McKay was able to clear the
second before a scoring op-
portunity materialized.
McNary senior Gustavo
Villalvazo then rocketed a free
kick well over the goal as time
ran out in the first half and the
Celtics went into intermission
down 3-0.
McNary junior Hunter
Miller began the second half
at goalkeeper, replacing starter
Sebastian Lopez.
After neither team scored
in the first 19 minutes, McKay
was sparked by a penalty kick
to expand its lead to 4-0.
The Scots added another
goal less than a minute later
and then scored its sixth goal
with 12:12 remaining in the
match.
Jose Abundiz replaced Mill-
er at keeper and McKay went
up 7-0 in the 69 th minute.
With 2:14 left to play,
Zepeda picked up a red card
and with McNary forced the
play a man down, the Scots
quickly scored their final goal
of the night.
The Celtics were also shut
out at McMinnville 4-0 on
Thursday, Oct. 6 and enter the
last week of the regular season
2-3-1 in league play.
McNary hosts North Sa-
lem Tuesday, Oct. 18 and then
travels to South Salem Thurs-
day, Oct. 20.
“The good news is we have
a bye week so that will help
us to regroup,” Camarena said.
“We’ll see what happens.”
off by an 19-yard touchdown
run by Lucas Garvey.
Van Voorhis intercepted
Smith with 53 seconds to
go in the first half and then
caught an 11-yard touchdown
pass from Gilbert with 12
seconds remaining to tie the
game.
After missing the extra
point, the Celtics took their
first lead, 23-20, on a 34-yard
field goal by A.J. Johnk with
9:49 remaining in the third
quarter. However, McMin-
nville didn’t stay down long
as Smith connected with Brad
Hessel for an 11-yard touch-
down four minutes later.
The Grizzlies missed a 38-
yard field goal early in the
fourth quarter and on fourth-
and-8 at the McNary 42-yard
line with 3:13 left to play, de-
cided to punt.
After a touchback, the
Celtics got inside McMin-
nville’s 15-yard line on a de-
fensive pass interference pen-
alty followed by the 41-yard
catch by Williams. However,
a face mask penalty and then
drops by Van Voorhis and Gar-
vey forced the fourth-and-25.
McMinnville
running
back Cedric Agcaoli-Ostrom
rushed for 201 yards and two
touchdowns but did most of
his damage in the first half.
“He’s a stud,” Auvinen said
of Agcaoli-Ostrom. “We made
some adjustments. The kids
got their shoulder pad down
a little bit and started getting
through a few blocks. It was
a gutsy team effort. We had
some kids at the D-line level
step up. We had some line-
backers step up. I’m so proud
of them. It’s a team that just
doesn’t give up. They keep
fighting and battling. We’ve
just got to keep doing that.”
Xavier
Martinez
also
caught a 14-yard touchdown
pass in the first quarter of the
McNary victory.
