McNary made the most of
its nearly 500-mile roundtrip
to North Medford High
School, advancing to the
championship game of the
Rogue Valley Classic, where
the Lady Celts came up short
against Crook County 2-0
(25-22, 25-18).
“We played Crook County
tough,” McNary head coach
Bruce Myers said. “They’re
just a good team. They have
great ball control. They stay in
system.”
The Lady Celts opened the
18-team tournament held on
Saturday, Sept. 17 by going
1-1-1 in pool play. McNary
easily defeated Thurston 2-0
(25-11, 25-16), tied North
Medford 1-1 (23-25, 25-14)
and lost to Crook County 2-0
(14-25, 18-25).
Once the tournament
began, the Lady Celts won
two tight matches, taking out
Grants Pass 2-0 (25-20, 25-22)
and Shasta 2-0 (25-22, 26-24)
to get to the championship.
“I thought we played well,”
Myers said. “What was nice is
that we were the aggressors
most of the day. Another
encouraging thing is that we
performed in the red zone
well. We played with really
good enthusiasm and intensity
and we stayed positive when
things weren’t going well.
That was really a good sign.”
Sydney Hunter had 29
kills, eight blocks, eights digs
and four aces on the day.
Shaylee Williams recorded
19 kills, two blocks and three
digs. Valerie Diede added 17
kills, 13 blocks, three aces and
fi ve digs.
Caiya had eight kills and
seven blocks. Jaylene Montano
led McNary in digs with 25
and Samantha Van Voorhis had
59 assists to go with three aces
and fi ve digs. Sophia Salinas
had eight aces.
“It was a really good
team
effort,”
Myers
said. “Everybody
really
contributed. At some time or
another, somebody came up
with a good play when we
needed it.”
The Lady Celts also
defeated McKay 3-0 (25-8,
25-20, 25-17) on Tuesday,
Sept. 20.
Hunter had 10 of the
team’s 21 kills along with four
aces and six digs.
Van Voorhis added 14 assists
and fi ve aces.
Coleman Young).
Whiteaker’s defense then
shut out Stephens to preserve
the victory.
Defensive line coach Angel
Ochoa credited defensive ends
Coleman Young and Griffi n
Hubbard for their aggressive
play.
“Between those two and
Martin (outside linebacker),
it seemed one or two of our
guys were in the backfi eld
on every play,” said Ochoa.
“Those guys set the tempo for
the whole defense.”
Stephens had two chances
to tie the game—the fi rst
was stopped on a great play
by
cornerback
Quentin
Camenisch to force an
incompletion in Whiteaker
territory. Then, late in the
fourth quarter, a Stephens
ballcarrier broke free for what
looked to be a game-tying
touchdown, but was caught
from behind in a game saving
tackle by free safety Nate
Meithof.
“I am so proud of our
defense,” said Wolverines head
coach Tom Larimer, “Despite
a signifi cant size disadvantage,
our defensive front controlled
the line of scrimmage, and
our secondary (Camenisch,
Meithof, Ethan Schurr and
Parks) was very disciplined
and tackled great.”
Martin
and
Griffi n
Hubbard led the defense with
nine tackles apiece. Young
added seven tackles and a
sack, and Hunter Zimmerman
recovered a fumble to go with
his four tackles.
Claggett Creek
Claggett Creek opened its
season with a 36-14 loss to
Crossler.
Ethan Martin scored on
a 40-yard pass from Jack
McNary’s girls soccer team
won a defensive battle at
Dallas on Thursday, Sept. 15.
Senior Kayla Evans scored
the only goal in the 64th
minute of the 1-0 victory,
fi nishing a ball in the box that
skipped off the goalkeeper’s
hand after a corner kick by
sophomore Gina Munguia.
“The fi rst half was a
defensive battle and the home
team brought an intensity
to the game that forced the
Celts to dig deep to match it,”
McNary head coach A.J. Nash
said. “The game was in a bit of
a gridlock the entire fi rst half
with limited quality efforts on
goal for either side.”
But the Celts began
wearing down Dallas in the
second half.
“A rotation of forwards
kept consistent pressure on the
ball and as Dallas began to tire

“It was an eye-opening

team as it was their fi rst football
game ever,” coach Aaron Carr
said. “We defi nitely have some
work to do on both sides of
the ball.”

Auvinen believes the game
will be won or lost in the
trenches and the Celtics will
be forced to play without
center Sam Farr, who suffered
an neck injury at Sprague.
Despite the consecutive
losses, Auvinen continues to
see improvement.
“We’ve
gotten
better
every week,” he said. “The
opponents have also gotten
better every week. This early
in the season, there’s a lot of
room to jump and get better.
It’s every major facet. It’s a
lot of different things we’re
working on all the time.”
“They
play
really
hard,” Auvinen said of his
homecoming
opponent.
“They are doing a good job.
They don’t run a ton of stuff.
They are getting off the ball
on the offensive line. They
are throwing the ball around
a little bit. They have a nice
balanced attack on offense.
Defensively, they are fl ying to
the football. They are playing
well. It will be interesting.”
McKay has a different
offense than last season,
