KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald
Keizer Fire District’s Tim Coburn poses for photos in front of his
portrait on the Iris Parade Mural.
MURAL,
continued from Page A1
Association
(KAA)
and
the Keizer Public Arts
Commission (KPAC), but it
was made possible through
some serendipitous timing on
the part of Lore Christopher
and Lebold.
KPAC applied for and
was awarded $2,500 for the
mural through the Oregon
Community Foundation, but
KPAC hadn't yet decided on a
site, said Christopher. After the
grant was secured, that's when
she approached Lebold.
“They came and said they
had some money to do a
community mural and they
wanted this wall,” Lebold
said. “I looked at her and I
smiled and said, 'You know,
about two months ago I was
talking to my wife and told
her I wanted to approach the
McNary (High School) art
program and see if they would
do a mural.'”
Christopher lit up and
exclaimed, “That's a God
thing.”
In addition to the grant,
Sherwin-Williams
donated
materials and $500 in paint.
Herc Rental donated the use
of a scaffold.
KAA took on a major role
in bringing the project to
completion by offering free
workshops to prospective
painters on a wide range of
topics and techniques. One
fi nal touch was added to
the mural in recent weeks, a
legend on the west side of the
mural identifying each of the
portrait faces.
With the mural fi nished,
KPAC is turning its attention
to large tree stumps in front
of Keizer Civic Center along
Chemawa Road Northeast.
The hope is to turn them into
story poles with community
members helping decide what
images will go there.
Mayor Cathy Clark was on-
hand at the mural dedication
to accept the mural on behalf
of the city.
“It's been so exciting to
see this project capture so
much of the pride, spirit and
volunteerism that is alive and
well in Keizer. We are delighted
and grateful to accept the gifts
and talents of all the artists in
our community who want to
celebrate who we are,” Clark
said.
