RUSHING
The Celtics only needed
two plays to answer right
back as Gilbert found Bren-
dan Van Voorhis wide open
for a 58-yard touchdown to
tie the game. The Saxons only
needed four as South Salem
quarterback Harrison Broadus
connected with Gavin Baugh-
man for a 51-yard touchdown
late in the third quarter.
McNary then fumbled the
kickoff and South Salem again
made the Celtics pay as Broa-
dus found Diego Fuimaono
wide open in the end zone for
a 11-yard score.
Trailing 34-20 with only
6:28 remaining in the game,
Gilbert and Van Voorhis again
connected for a touchdown,
this time from 38 yards, to give
McNary a chance.
The Celtics then recovered
a South Salem fumble and
took possession at their oppo-
nent’s 14-yard line with 5:12
left to play.
On fi rst-and-goal from the
3, Gilbert fought his way into
the end zone but the touch-
down was negated on an ille-
gal procedure penalty.
On third down from the
2-yard line, Gilbert’s number
was called again but trying to
reach the ball over the goal

Alfano could tell imme-
diately the competition was
tougher.
“They pressed a lot more
and they were just a lot more
patient compared to the other
teams we’ve played,” she said.
But with the win, Mc-
Nary’s confi dence continues
to grow.
“No matter what team we
go up against, it doesn’t matter,
we’re convinced we’re going
to win,” Alfano said. “We feel
like we can take anyone on at
this point.”

line he fumbled and the Sax-
ons recovered in the end zone
for a touchback.
McNary’s defense stopped
South Salem on third-and-2,
tackling Broadus for a 3-yard
loss to force fourth down and
give the offense enough time
to come back down the fi eld.
However, on the punt, the
Celtics were penalized for
having too many men on the

Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.
McNary boys fall
The Celts gave one of the
best teams in the state all it
could handle before allowing
two goals in the fi nal 20 min-
utes to fall to Grant 2-0 on the
road Thursday, Sept. 8.
McNary had three chances
to score in the fi rst half, one
shot went right to the keeper,
one just missed the goal and
another hit the post.
“We’re creating opportuni-
ties, which is fantastic,” head
coach Miguel Camarena said.
“We just need to make sure
we put them in the net.”
The Celtics also open con-
ference play against a tough
West Salem side Thursday,
Sept. 22 but on the road.
The Titans were the state
runner-up last season.
fi eld, which gave the Saxons a
fi rst down.
Wanting an explanation,
Auvinen was then issued a 15-
yard personal foul for not get-
ting off the fi eld.
South Salem was able to
run the clock down to fi ve
seconds and on fourth down
Broadus took the snap and ran
out of the end zone for a safe-
ty to make the score 34-29.
With two seconds to play,
the Saxons kicked off to Mc-
Nary. The Celtics tried to lat-
eral the ball across the fi eld but
the play was intercepted, end-
ing the game.
“There’s going to be 10
kids and 10 coaches prob-
ably that wake up seeing (a
different deciding) play in
their mind’s eye, at least one,”
Auvinen said. “I have a feeling
I might have multiple plays
that I end up seeing. It’s just
a matter of being a little bit
green. Our experience is not
great and so under that Friday
night lights, that pressure can
be, so I think these fi rst two
games have been good for us.
It would be great to be 2-0 but
with that being said, there’s a
ton of learning there. As long
as we can keep getting better.
Like I told the kids, the season
is not made in week two. The
season is made in week seven,
eight, nine, 10 and beyond
that. Limit the mistakes, clean
it up, continue to play hard
and great things can happen.”
Gilbert threw for 275 yards,
rushed for 33 and scored all
four touchdowns.
Josh Benson caught 10
passes for 84 yards. McNary’s
four running backs, Johnk,
Marc Baiza, Lucas Garvey and
Xavier Martinez combined to
rush for just 49 yards.

the Vikings.
“I thought we played well
after we got started,” Lady
Celts coach Bruce Myers
said. “In set two, I thought we
played very well and then we
lost our focus for set three. We
allowed them to stay with us.
We were not inside the lines.
We were worried about too
many things outside so we
need to take care of that.”
Sydney Hunter had 10 of
McNary’s 27 kills and four of
the team’s 15 aces. Valerie Die-
de had fi ve kills and three aces
while Shaylee Williams added
six kills. Jaylene Montano
chipped in with seven digs and
Sophia Salinas had fi ve aces.
“We served well and we
kept them out of system,” My-
ers said. “That’s really big for
us to keep them out of system.
We did a really good job of at-
tacking also. We need to con-
tinue to work on our timing in
the middle. Our timing is not
very good and we’ve got to re-
ally work on that.”
McNary fell behind 3-8 in
the fi rst set before winning
seven of the next eight points
to take a 10-9 lead it wouldn’t
relinquish.
The second game was nev-
er in doubt as the Lady Celts
jumped out to a 13-6 advan-
tage. McNary came out lacka-
daisical again in the fi nal set,
losing the fi rst four points but
quickly recovered to put away

McNary senior Kayla Evans scored the Lady Celts fi rst goal
against Gresham on a corner kick from Gina Munguia in the
25th minute.
