instincts, he’s got good vision. He doesn’t
quite have the arm strength of Josiah but he’s
got more experience. That counts for a lot
with quarterbacks, too. It would be nice if we
could use Josiah at receiver and get them both
in at the same time. That would help us quite
a bit. We’ll see how it shakes out.”
Auvinen also wants to get the ball in junior
Lucas Garvey’s hands.
“Garvey is a kid with a lot of skills,”
Auvinen said. “He’s potentially a running back
for us. He’s a slot receiver, he’s a wide receiver.
He’s lanky with a good ability to leap.”
Garvey should also see time on defense at
safety or corner, matching up against taller
receivers.
Another skilled player making an
impression on coaches is junior Jose Solorio.
“He’s worked his tail off in the weight
room and he’s getting faster and quicker all of
the time,” Auvinen said. “He could see time
on both sides of the ball.”
Cody Gilmore is another quick player

and defensive back. Freshman Junior Walling
is also in the mix on defense at either strong

“We have a good group of kids,”
Auvinen said. “They’re nice kids. They’re

going to put the work in. I think we have
some good fundamentals. If we can keep
everybody healthy, I think we’ve got a good
starting rotation. I think they’re smart enough
that they can pick up various things. We want

to be as unpredictable on defense as we are on
offense this year so we want to keep people
off balance. I think they are smart enough to
do that.”
Auvinen expects Sprague and West Salem
to be the favorites to win the GVC.
“They are both solid programs and
returning a lot,” he said. “They kind of
dominated the JV league. Both have quite
a few returning starters on both sides of the
football. Those two are the teams to beat. They
can be beaten. I don’t think they are dominant
but they go in as the teams to beat, I think.”
