AUVINEN: ‘We have
a good group of kids’
continued from Page 3
McNary senior A.J. Jhonk, who missed last
season with a torn ACL in his left knee, carries
the ball for the Celtics during a Blue Day
scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Senior Brendan Van Voorhis will lead the
receiving corp as well as play in the secondary.
“He’s got a great skill set,” Auvinen said.
“He can run, he’s got good vision, he’s smart,
so he’s going to be a kid that we depend on
quite a bit. We’d like for him to play every
snap.”
Van Voorhis, a track athlete who runs the
100, 200 and 400 and has a scholarship offer
from West Point, enjoys playing on both sides
of the ball.
“I like stopping people and making tackles
but I also like scoring,” he said.
Senior Xavier Martinez and junior Jakoby
Doke both return at linebacker and could also
see time on offense as well this season.
Seniors Sam Farr and Caleb Kiefl uk-Yates
are back on the offensive line. Brent Olsen,
a junior, has started at tight end, but will
move to tackle this season. Sophomore Josh
Schmeltzer could also make his way on to the
offensive line.
“He’s a sophomore academically but he’s
got a big ole body on him,” Auvinen said.
“He moves his feet well. He works hard and is
potentially a starting guard for us.”
MHS has two seniors who could get snaps
at quarterback—Tyler Ellertson and Josiah
Gilbert.
“Quarterbacks are very different,” Auvinen
said. “Josiah is big and strong, got a very good
arm, not much experience at quarterback.
He’s been more of a natural receiver. He’s
defi nitely an athlete. He’s played more receiver
than quarterback but he’s got a great arm.
He’s the baseball teams No. 1 pitcher, wants
to pitch in college. Tyler has been quarterback
all throughout. He’s backed up kids and last
year he got a chance to shine with the JV. He’s
probably got more experience, he’s got good
