Kailey Doutt has led by example the
past two years, fi nishing fi fth at the Great-
er Valley Conference Championships and
advancing to the state meet.
Now a junior
on the McNary
cross country team,
Doutt is ready to
be more of a vocal
leader.
“I want to be
a leader for the
younger kids this
year because I’m
one of the more
experienced run-
ners so I want to
help my teammates
get better,” Doutt
said. “If I can lead
team drills before
races and gather
everyone together to warm up, just push
them in practice, encourage them.”
Doutt, who ran more than 200 miles
“everywhere around Keizer” this summer,
hopes to once again fi nish near the top
of the GVC but have a better showing at
state, where she placed 57th as a freshman
and 53rd as a sophomore.
“I don’t like that course [Lane Com-
munity College in Eugene],” Doutt said.
“I never do good there. It is a tough
course and I feel like I always feel bad. I
put a lot of pressure
on myself, all the
time.”
Doutt also wants
to break 19 min-
utes. She was close
last year, running
19:13 in the district
meet at Bush Park.
“I just need to
train hard and push
myself in practice
and the hard work-
outs and all the
intervals and run
— Kailey Doutt with the guys,” she
said. “They’ll make
me better. I’m re-
ally close.”
McNary graduated its top three guys
from last season, which leaves juniors Jo-
nas Honeymoon, Noah Egli and Noah
Grunberg to carry the load. They’ll be
“ I want to be a leader
for the younger kids
this year because I’m
one of the more
experienced runners
so I want to help my
teammates get better.”
