The Anna Maria Pittman Chapter of National Society
Daughters of the American Revolution is inviting all churches,
schools, fi rehouses and individuals in Keizer and surrounding
areas to participate in the upcoming Bells Across America event.
The event celebrates the 229th anniversary of the signing of
the United States Constitution with a bell-ringing at 1 p.m. Sat-
urday, Sept. 17 — the date the Constitution was signed. Since
Sept. 17 is on a Saturday, Bells will ring at Constitution Hall in
Philadelphia and other Government Offi ces on Friday, Sept. 16,
at 1 p.m. pacifi c time. Participants can ring them both on the
16th and 17th.
The Anna Maria Pittman Keizer Chapter will celebrate with
a display at the Keizer Heritage Center and will participate in
Bells Across America at the Center Sept. 17 from 11:30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. Bell ringing will be at 1 p.m.
Churches are requested to ring their bells for fi ve minutes. All
others are being asked to ring their bells for one minute
Aims of the celebration are to emphasize citizens’ responsibil-
ities for protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving it
for posterity; inform the people that the Constitution is the basis
for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of
life; and encourage the study of the historical events which led
to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

AVID,
continued from Page A5
College-age tutors come
to CCMS two days a week
to help AVID students with
problem areas.
Seventh and eighth grad-
ers have an opportunity to
take PSAT and SAT tests.
In July, Schoepper, Avid
Coordinator Kelly Greer and
27 teachers from Claggett
went to Denver, Colo. to the
AVID Summer Institute for
professional
development
and to put together a site
plan for the year.
CCMS is working towards
becoming an AVID National
Demonstration School and
started an 18-month coach-
ing cycle last fall. An AVID
program assistant comes to
the school for assessments
and gives feedback to pre-
pare Claggett for its valida-
tion visit, when AVID will
fl y in a team from across
the country to meet with
students and staff as well as
observe classrooms to deter-
mine if CCMS will become
just the second demo school
in Oregon.
Last school year, Schoep-
per and Greer hosted doz-
ens of educators from across
the state, showing what their
school has been able to ac-
complish through AVID. On
Dec. 6, CCMS will have
a formal showcase where
65 middle and high school
teachers from all over Or-
egon will go to student and
staff panels as well as visit
classrooms and see WICOR
instruction.
“And it only works be-
cause we have the most dedi-
cated, wonderful staff and we
all share one vision,” Greer
said. “I think that’s what sets
us apart from other schools.
Everybody is working to-
wards the same vision, which
is all of our kids will be pre-
pared for high school and
beyond.”
Liberty House is hosting a
Champions for Children Lun-
cheon Tuesday, Sept. 20. It will
be at the Salem Convention
Center from noon to 1 p.m.
Seating starts at 11:30 a.m.
The lunch will be a learning
opportunity to fi nd out about
Liberty House’s work with
children and how a person can
help Liberty House provide
hope and healing.
If you are interested in invit-
ing others to learn about Lib-
erty House’s work, be a table
