Volcanoes end season with win
right center, driving in Hamp-
son.
Rico Garcia, the Hawks’
starting pitcher, was replaced.
The Volcanoes greeted Mc-
Cormick with six runs in the
fourth. Zack Bowers walked
and went to second as Julio
Pena grounded out. Woody
Edwards hit an infield sin-
gle, sending Bowers to third.
Kevin Rivera singled to left,
scoring Bowers and moving
Edwards to third. Brusa drove
in Bowers and Edwards with a
double to center. Kirby dou-
bled to right center, driving
in Brusa. Heyward was hit by
a pitch, and newcomer Nick
Hill reached first on an error
by second baseman Anthony
Brito.
With the bases loaded,
Bowers, batting for the second
time in the inning, brought
Kirby and Heyward home
with a single to left. Salem-
Keizer led 11-1.
Adon, the winning pitcher
left the game after five innings.
He had struck out five and al-
lowed five hits and two walks.
Sidney Duprey relieved him,
giving up no runs in the sixth
and one in the seventh.
In the Volcano sixth, Hey-
ward walked with one out and
went to second on a wild pitch.
Hill hit an infield single, and a
wild pitch advanced both run-
ners. Julio Pena drove Hey-
ward home with a single to
right. Edwards walked to load
the bases. Alec Kenilvort took
the mount with two out and
retired the next batter.
Brito led off the Boise
seventh with a double down
the left field line and went to
third on a passed ball by Dylan
Manwaring, who had replaced
Bowers behind the plate. Ty-
ler Follis hit an infield single,
scoring Brito.
John Timmins took the
mound for the Volcanoes in
the eighth and walked the first
two batters but settled down
and retired the next three.
Justin Lawrence pitched
the eighth for the Hawks and
gave up an infield single to
Heyward but struck out the
next three men.
Jeff Burke pitched a score-
less ninth for Salem-Keizer.
Noting that the Volcanoes
have had more winning than
losing seasons recently, man-
ager Kyle Haines gave credit
to the player development
system of the San Francisco
Giants.
“We have more home-
grown players than any other
team,” he said.
Asked what he had worked
on the most this year, Haines
said, “Trying to get our pitch-
ers to establish the strike zone.”
Heyward, a newcomer
from the Arizona Instruc-
tional League, had three hits,
two of them doubles, drove
in four runs and scored two.
He played left field and is the
brother of Chicago Cubs right
fielder Jason Heyward. He
said he found the overall qual-
ity of play in the short-season
class A Northwest League
more advanced than in the in-
structional league.
Adon, speaking through
teammate Leo Rojas as a
translator, was asked what he
had been working on to im-
prove his pitching through the
season.
“Getting a better temp and
controlling my pitches,” he
said through Rojas.
Three Volcanoes, the most
for any club in the North-
west League, were named to
the post-season NWL all-star
team: outfielder Heath Quinn,
who was promoted late in the
season to the advanced class
A San Jose Giants; outfielder
Brusa; and second baseman
Rivera.

Salem-Keizer followed two
straight rainouts in Vancouver
with a blown lead at home in
the final season series.
The Volcanoes took a 3-2
lead in the bottom of the third
inning by scoring three un-
earned runs. After two outs
and an error that put Jason
Heyward on first base, Gio
Brusa singled, and he and
Heyward pulled a double steal.
A throwing error by pitcher
Mike Bunal allowed Heyward
to score. John Riley then hit a
home run.
Boise tied the score with
a run in the seventh, and the
Volcanoes went back ahead
with a run in the eighth.
In the ninth, two singles, a
sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice
fly gave the Hawks their lead. J
Sept. 4: Boise 13,
Volcanoes 5
Boise hammered Salem-
Keizer in the second to the
last game of the 2016 season.
Although the Hawks out-
hit the Volcanoes only 14-10,
they scored more runs than
they needed in the second and
fourth innings, four of them in
each. The Volcanoes also out-
homered their visitors, with
Kevin Rivera’s third of the
season and one by newcom-
er Brandon Van Horn; Wil-
lie Abreu hit the only Hawk
home run.
The Volcanoes scored three
times in the fifth inning, when
both homers were hit, and
twice in the sixth.

Kailey Doutt showed
Wednesday, Aug. 31 that she
remains one of the top cross
country runners in the Great-
er Valley Conference.
Even on a bad day.
Running in the GVC Pre-
view at Crystal Lake Sports
Park in Corvallis, the McNary
junior finished sixth in the
varsity girls race in 21 minutes
and 10 seconds, or nearly two
minutes slower than her PR.
“My legs the day before
were super tired and then in
the race it was just really bad,”
Doutt said. “I felt like I wasn’t
going to be able to finish. My
hamstrings are bothering me
and it’s probably just because
the season just started. The
course, I had never run on it
and it was all grass, which I
don’t like running in. It was
new. Hopefully I’ll do better
next time.”
Doutt had her wisdom
teeth removed in mid-August
and missed the first week of
practice.
“I think I just need to keep
working hard in practice and
use it (21:10) as motivation to
get better,” Doutt said. “I get
really disappointed in myself
easily and I’m really competi-
tive and I hate doing worse
than I think I should so it def-
initely makes me want to do
better and beat people next
time.”
Doutt wasn’t the only run-
ner to have a slower time. The
winner of the girls race, Anna
Chau of South Salem, finished
more than a minute and a half
behind her PR.
Following Doutt, Emma
Garland, running in her first
cross country race, took 28 th
in 23 minutes for McNary
and Alison Repp placed 33 rd
in 24:02.
Makayla Long (26:30)
and Madeline Bielby (26:38)
rounded out the scoring for
the Lady Celts.
“I’m happy with every-
body’s first 5K of the season
but you could really tell that
it was the first 5K,” McNary
coach Kyle Rose said. “A lot
of the team went out a little
too fast so it was one of those
the first mile was good, the
second mile not so good, the
third mile they figured it out.
We’ll figure it out as we get
more meets in us, I think it’s
going to be good.”
Leading the McNary boys,
Noah Grunberg finished 45 th
in 20:18. Senior Cameron
Garrison, in his first cross
country race, took 47 th in
20:20 and Jonas Honeyman
placed 50 th in 20:33.
“We didn’t really know
what to expect from him,”
Rose said. “He had a couple
weeks of practice and you’re
not really sure and he came
in with a 20:20. I think he’s
going to get much faster than
that once he realizes where he
should be in the pack and starts
to get a little more confidence,
we’re going to see some great
improvements from that. Jo-
nah and Noah are going to be
right behind him and pushing
him saying, ‘I don’t want you
in front of us anymore.’ It’s go-
ing to be fun watching those
three push each other through
the season.”
Grant Biondi (21:07) and
Samuel Hernandez (21:39)
also scored for McNary.
McNary travels to Western
Oregon University Saturday,
Sept. 10 to run in the Ash
Creek Cross Country Festival.
Rose is expecting about 40
teams.
“I think it will be fun for
the kids to run against some
different competition than
they’ve been running against
the last couple of years,” Rose
said.

A 12-2 home victory over
the Boise Hawks ended a
largely frustrating season for
the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes
on Monday.
Led by the heavy hitting of
newcomer Jacob Heyward and
the pitching of Melvin Adon,
the Volcanoes scored the first
two runs of the game in the
second inning and stayed in
command the rest of the way.
Ryan Kirby walked to lead
off the bottom of the second
and moved to second base on
a bunt single by Ryan Howard.
Heyward doubled to left field,
scoring Kirby. Zack Bowers,
grounding out, brought How-
ard home.
A two-out single to right
by Gio Brusa started the third-
inning rally. Kirby singled to
center, and Howard walked to
load the bases. Heyward drove
in all three with a double.
Boise’s first run came in the
fourth. Garrett Hampson sin-
gled to left and stole second.
Jacob Bosiokovic singled to
