McNary to open
season at North
KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley
McNary linebacker Kolby Barker rushes a punt during practice. For the third year in a row, the
Celtics will open the football season against North Salem.
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
Kolby Barker enters the
Sept. 2 season opener against
North Salem confi dent.
The McNary senior has at
least three reasons to be: 34-
21, 35-21 and 41-0.
Those are the scores of the
Celtics wins over North Sa-
lem the last three seasons.
“I certainly don’t intend
to lose,” Barker said. “We
shouldn’t have an issue with
that. We’ve always had better
players and I think that’s go-
ing to continue. I feel very
comfortable with our person-
nel matchup against theirs.
I’m excited. I feel really good
about our game plan for it.”
Barker and the rest of the
McNary defense got an idea
of what it will line up against
when the Celtics played
Canby Thursday, Aug. 25 in a
preseason jamboree. Both the
Cougars and Vikings run a
Wing-T.
“We got to be a little more
physical than we were with
Canby, for sure,” Barker said.
“We’ve got to come out ready
to play. We started slow like
we’ve done in the past. That’s
always been kind of our is-
sue. That’s a good reminder of
how we cannot play.”
McNary head coach Jeff
Auvinen called his team’s play
in the jamboree “typical.”
“We made some nice plays
on both sides of the ball,” he
said. “We made some plays
that weren’t very good. We
had some alignment issues.
It was good to hit somebody
else. It was good to get the jit-
ters out a little bit and learn
from it. We’ve made adjust-
ments.”
Three players immediately
stood out to Auvinen in the
jamboree—Kyle McCallister,
who caught a long touch-
down pass, Josiah Gilbert on
defense, and freshman Junior
Walling, getting his fi rst varsity
action at strong safety.
“I thought he [Walling]
showed that can he plan,”
Auvinen said. “That was good
to see.”
Auvinen said the key to
McNary continuing its reign
over North Salem is winning
the line of scrimmage.
“They are going to try to
get off the ball,” he said. “They
are going to run right at you
and fl y around on defense the
best they can.”
Auvinen also noted the Vi-
kings numbers are down with
just 27 players on the varsity
roster compared to McNary’s
54. Kickoff is scheduled for 7
p.m. at North Salem.
‘Flying, diving and digging’
Lady Celts defeat
McKay in opener
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
McNary opened volleyball
season Tuesday, Aug. 30 with a
dominating 3-0 (25-7, 25-16,
25-17) victory over Greater
Valley Conference opponent
McKay.
Playing in front of the
home crowd, the Lady Celts
jumped out to a 11-3 lead in
the fi rst game.
The second set was a little
tighter with McKay taking an
early 6-4 lead before McNary
went on a 12-3 run to take
control. The Lady Celts then
led the entire third game to
put McKay away.
“I thought we played
well,” McNary head coach
Bruce Myers said. “We did a
lot of good things. I was very
pleased with our serving. We
stayed assertive. We hit our
zones pretty much like we
wanted and we communicat-
ed well. I like how we covered
the court. We had a few misses
but for the most part we actu-
ally covered the court and we
were fl ying, diving and dig-
ging and it’s what we want to
do and that’s what we have to
continue to do.”
As a team, McNary fi n-
ished with 11 aces, 10 kills, six
blocks and 14 digs.
Senior outside hitter Syd-
ney Hunter had six kills, four
digs, two aces and a block in
the victory.
Outside hitter Shaylee
Williams and opposite Kara
Thomas each had two kills
while middle blocker Valerie
Diede added three aces and
three blocks.
“I think sometimes we
were kind of quiet but for the
most part we had good en-
ergy against them and I feel
like that will help when we’re
playing a bigger team like
West Salem,” Diede said. “We
did good not playing down
to their level and playing our
own game.”
Junior setter Sam Van Voor-
his had six assists, four digs and
an ace.
“I thought Sam had a very
good night contributing the
ball to the hitters that were
available,” Myers said. “I’m
very pleased.”
KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley
Middle blocker Valerie Diede had three aces and three blocks in McNary’s 3-0 Greater Valley Conference win over McKay at home
Tuesday night to begin the 2016 season.
The competition will get
tougher for the Lady Celts,
who play South Salem and
reigning conference cham-
pion West Salem on the road
Tuesday.
“We just have to play like
we did tonight, good decision
making and the old adage play
one pass at a time, one serve
and all that good stuff,” My-
ers said.
Celtics tie Aloha 1-1 on penalty kick
By DEREK WILEY
Of the Keizertimes
With McNary down a goal
and the clock running out in
its season opener, senior Bryan
Keo wasn’t nervous as he lined
up to attempt a penalty kick.
“Honestly, I was really cool
about it,” Keo said. “If I missed
it, I missed it. If I scored, then
good.”
With 7:33 remaining, Keo
was able to put the ball in the
back left corner of the net past
Aloha’s diving goalkeeper. But
the scoring stopped there as
the Celtics kicked off the sea-
son Monday, Aug. 29 with a
1-1 draw at home.
“It felt great,” Keo said of
making the penalty kick. “Our
momentum came back and
we got back into the game
and we had many chances to
win. It was a good game. We
could have started off bet-
ter like right when it kicked
off but then the way we were
playing the rest of the game
was good. We have to play like
that and even better the rest of
the season.”
Keo got the opportunity
when a handball was called on
an Aloha defender inside the
penalty box.
The Warriors scored their
only goal less than 9 minutes
into the contest when a ball
went fl ying over the head of
McNary keeper Sebastian
Lopez, who was able to get
a hand on it but not able to
keep the ball out of the net.
From there, Aloha played a
packed in defense, making it
diffi cult for the Celtics to put
shots on goal.
“We have to move the ball
better and create more oppor-
tunities,” McNary head coach
Miguel Camarena said. “We
are a young team, fi rst time
that they’ve played at this lev-
el. They recovered and that’s a
good thing. You always want
to win at home but it was
good to come back against a
good team.”
Two freshmen, Luis Lopez
and Jack Baez, played up front
for the Celtics against a physi-
cal Aloha defense.
“You are a 14-year-old
playing against the speed and
strength but our kids showed
they can play at this level,” Ca-
marena said. “They are young
and I look forward to them
getting better.”
Senior defender Gustavo
Villalvazo has been cleared to
play after having knee surgery
early last season but sat out
the opener. Camarena said he
wants Villalvazo to get more
practice time before playing in
his fi rst game.
Lady Celts win
McNary’s girls soccer team
started the 2016 campaign
with a 2-0 win on the road in
Woodburn Tuesday, Aug. 30.
The Lady Celtics began the
season with six upperclassmen
and fi ve underclassmen in the
starting eleven.

a penalty kick with 7:33 remaining in the game.
