Marchbanks inspired by her father
KEIZERTIMES.COM
When Sandy Marchbanks
was deciding what to do with
her life, she thought of her fa-
ther.
“My father would have
been a student that was
served in the LRC (Learn-
ing Resource Center), very
bright, can design machinery,
couldn’t really read until he
was about 12, very dyslexic,”
Marchbanks said. “I can re-
member women looked up
phone numbers in the phone
book and men didn’t. My dad
would see something in iso-
lation, letters and numbers
would get reversed for him.
He’s an avid reader. He loves
to read but it took him a long
time to learn and he has to be
able to read things in context.”
Marchbanks was in high
school when Public Law 94-
142, which assured that all
children with disabilities had
available to them a free appro-
priate public education, was
signed by President Gerald
Ford.
She got her bachelor’s
degree at Eastern Oregon
University and a Master’s in
special education at Western
Oregon. Her desire to help
those with disabilities through
education came from her fi rst
grade teacher, Mrs. Hahn.
“She was from Colorado
and started teaching when
she was 17 and probably 65
when I was in fi rst grade,”
Marchbanks said. “She just
knew kids. She was really pa-
tient. She inspired us. I can
still remember the fi rst day of
fi rst grade and we went home
knowing we could read be-
cause we could read our own
name and she had taught us
the words ‘the’ and “end”. She
made every kid feel success-
ful and she had plants and she
had animals. There was always
something exciting in her
room and she just made every
kid feel like they were special
and wonderful and smart and I
wanted to grow up and be like
her, I think.”
After starting out in Ne-
vada, Marchbanks taught at el-
ementary and middle schools
in Lebanon for 20 years. She
then decided to give high
school a try and joined the
staff at South Salem for two
years before coming to Mc-
Nary, where she worked in
the LRC
for the past
eight years.

“I’m hoping to get to sub
here,” she said. “It’s a hard
place to leave. This staff just
really cares about kids and re-
ally cares about each other and
is willing to put in the extra
effort to make things happen
for kids. And why would you
want to leave that? It’s a neat
community and it’s a neat
school. Hopefully, I can stay
involved in some aspect but
maybe in a little different way.”
