Volcanoes 6-11 on the road
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
The Salem-Keizer Volca-
noes went 2-4 last week.
Here are the recaps:
July 13: Spokane 10,
Volcanoes 7
Salem-Keizer led early in
the game and outhit host Spo-
kane 13-7, but Volcano pitch-
ers helped the Indians by issu-
ing 10 walks.
Trailing 5-3 going into the
seventh inning, the Volcanoes
went back ahead with four
runs.
With two out, Bryan
Reynolds singled and Heath
Quinn walked. Gustavo Ca-
brera singled Reynolds home,
and Ryan Howard scored
Quinn with a double. John
Riley singled to drive in Ca-
brera and Howard.
However, three walks, two
hits, and a wild pitch gave the
Indians four runs in the bot-
tom of the seventh. Spokane
added the last run of the game
in the eighth.
The
Volcanoes
went
through fi ve pitchers, starting
with Mac Marshall, with Car-
los Diaz taking the loss at 1-1.
Johan Juan was the winning
pitcher in relief at 1-2.
July 14: Volcanoes 12,
Spokane 4
This time the Volcanoes
made their hits -- 21 of them
-- count.
They had to come from
behind to do it, trailing 4-3
after two innings. Their runs
were spread out, with no more
per inning than the three in
the sixth.
Starting pitcher Victor

Catcher John Riley went 2-for-5 with a double Tuesday.

Indians’ runs, only two of
which were earned, and struck
out six in his six innings.

home run for Salem-Keizer
and Ryan Howard and Bryan
Reynolds their fi rst. Spokane’s

Concepcion’s record went
to 2-4. Spokane starter Luke
Lanphere was the losing
pitcher with a 1-3 record.
July 15: Spokane 4,
Volcanoes 3
A 2-0 Salem-Keizer lead
ended in the bottom of the
fourth inning when the Indi-
ans scored four runs.
In the top of the fi rst, Bryan
Reynolds hit his second home
run of the season with Heath
Quinn, who had singled, on
base. Reynolds also walked,
stole two bases, and scored on
a ground out in the sixth.
Spokane’s Seth Spivey hit a
two-run homer in the fourth.
Two outs followed, but then
Darius Day walked, Stephen
Lohr doubled him home,
and a single by Brallan Perez
scored Lohr.
Henberger Medina was the
Volcanoes’ starting and losing
pitcher at 2-3. The Indians’
starter, Sal Mendez, got the
win at 2-1, and Kaleb Fon-
tenot had his fi rst save.
July 16: Spokane 7,
Volcanoes 1
The Volcanoes lost the
rubber game of the series at
Spokane on Saturday, getting
clobbered 7-1.
Spokane had 12 hits to
four for Salem-Keizer, whose

scored Jan Ree 216-95.

gone to third on a double to
left center fi eld by John Riley.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom
of the second, the Indians had
two out when Clay Middle-

Castillo then hit a home run
over the left center fi eld fence,
giving the hosts all the runs
they would need.
Spokane scored two insur-
ance runs in the third, one
in the fourth, and two in the
fi fth.
Kevin Lenik relieved starter
Kyle Cody for Spokane in
the sixth, with Heath Quinn
hitting a leadoff single. Bryan
Reynolds then hit a fl y to
deep center that made center
fi elder Spivey crash into the
wall, but he caught the ball.
Two outs followed.
Both clubs used more
pitchers than usual, apparently
because Sunday would be an
off day. Carlos Diaz, Jeff Burke,
and Cesar Yanez pitched an
inning apiece and pitched ef-
fectively. Alex Daniele pitched
the eighth and Johan Juan for
the Indians.
Volcano manager Kyle
Haines, who has been rotat-
ing his position players to a
degree, gave little-used Dylan
Manwaring a pinch hit job in
the ninth, but he popped out
to end the game.
Cody was the winning
pitcher to improve to 2-1.

prospects at this level, lasted
only two innings. Boise starter
