McNary athletes show Celtic Pride
By TIM HAYS
Of the Keizertimes
McNary High School ath-
letics has had a successful year
overall, but this year’s Celtic
Pride Award winners have
seen the athletic scene change
mightily in their four years.
The Celtic Pride Award is
given to athletes who compete
in three sports all four years of
their high school career. This
year’s honorees were: Isaiah
Holt, Hayden Sader, Jason
Sperle and Trent Van Cleave.
The one thing that each of
them have in common is they
have all been teammates in
more than one sport.
Each athlete had their own
niche on the fi eld, though it
was off the fi eld where they
made their claim. Each stu-
dent claimed at least a 3.25
GPA and all will be attending
college in the fall.
Jason Sperle
A three-year letterman
in football, two-year letter-
man in basketball, and an all-
district thrower in track and
fi eld, Sperle surrounded him-
self with success.
“I fi lled in the role wher-
ever I could help out, whether
that was on the fi eld or off,”
he said.
Sperle found his niche early:
leading. He led on the fi eld by
example, he led through en-
couragement, and he pumped
up his team through the pas-
sion he had for each sport.
“I was always very outgo-
ing. You have to stand up to
the challenge, and I believe
I did that,” he said. “Football
has been more infl uential in
my leadership development,
though I feel that I was able
to become a better leader in
everything I did.”
Football impacted his life
differently than most people,
and so did his coaches.
“Coach Isaac Parker defi -
nitely was a big impact on my
life. Not just in football, but in
everything else. He helped me
learn the game in an in-depth
way, and I owe a lot to him.”
Sperle will be attend-
ing Portland State University
where he will be playing foot-
ball.
Isaiah Holt
Holt competed in football,
baseball, and swimming.
In football, he played offen-
sive line, in baseball he was a
catcher, and for swim team he
swam the 100-yard butterfl y,

100-yard backstroke, and 200-
yard individual medley.
Holt separated himself in
the classroom. Holt was one
of only two males in the en-
tire 2016 class to attain a 4.0
GPA, making him one of sev-
en valedictorians.
“I like to do the best I can
do,” Holt said. “It’s great that
other people see it and think
that it is cool, but for me per-
sonally, I have to do it because
it’s what I want to do. I want
to be the best that I can.”
When asked about which
coached had the most impact
on, he said former Head Foot-
ball Coach Isaac Parker.
“He pushed me to be a
better person. To an extent all
my coaches did that, but with
him I had a good relationship.
He pushed you to not only
be a better football player, but
how to be better academically
and how to reach your goals,”
Holt said.
After a two-year mission,
Holt will attend college at
Brigham Young University
where he will study neurosci-
ence.
“I love helping people. I
love sciences and I think the
brain is super-interesting, and
I just want to study it further.”
Hayden “Raider” Sader
Sader was well known for
his enthusiasm among his
teammates. Focusing most of
his high school career playing
football, Sader received many
honors in his favorite sport.
“Football is my favorite be-
cause it is the one sport that
no one can play their whole
life. For that reason, I cherish
it,” he said.
Sader also competed on the
track and fi eld team, as well as
the basketball team. Through
all his years at McNary, Sader
stuck out for being a competi-
tor. No matter the score, you
could always fi nd Sader going
as hard as he could.
“I learned how to lead in a
much different way. I had still
learned how to play as hard as
ever and work as if I did play,”
Sader said.
Sader will most likely be at-
tending George Fox Universi-
ty, though is he still undecided.
“I could not have done it
without all the people who
supported me; My family,
friends, coaches, teammates,
and my teachers,” Sader said.
“I was surrounded by success-
ful people who only wanted
the best for me.”
Trent Van Cleave
As a three-year varsity start-
er in football and basketball,
Van Cleave is the only player
of the four Celtic Pride ath-
letes to compete in four sports
while he was at McNary.
He received all-league
honors basketball and football
where he shined most often.
Van Cleave is probably
most known for his versatil-
ity on the fi eld. In football, he
played running back, quarter-
back, corner and safety during
his time. In basketball, he was

a point guard known for his
scoring, though also pressured
opponents with his defensive
ability.
In baseball, Van Cleave
played middle infi eld early on,
however became a prominent
starter in this year’s outfi eld –
playing all three positions. In
track he ran both the 100 and
200 meter sprints.
“The team aspect [of
sports] is important. Everyone
is working hard together, and
you have to communicate.
You can’t be good if only one
player is good. We all have to
do our own job,” he said.
Van Cleave wants to be a
police offi cer after he gradu-
ates from college. He will at-
tend Linfi eld College and
study psychology. While at
Linfi eld, Trent will also play
football in hopes of fi nding his
role for the team this fall.
“My parents always instilled
a strong work ethic in my life
and my older brothers have al-
ways pushed me to do more
for my team. I couldn’t thank
them enough for all they have
done in order to allow me to
get to this point in my life,”
Van Cleave said.

Nana Biehn peacefully
joined her Lord and Savior on
Wednesday, June 1, 2016. She
was 96 years old. She was born
to Alfred and Gunda Johnson
on Feb. 15, 1920, in Storla, SD.
She was on her way to
“Rosie the Riveter” School
in Seattle when she stopped
in Payette, ID to stay with
relatives. There she found a job
as a telephone operator and
met the love of her life—Claud
Biehn, in 1946. They married
on Feb. 9, 1947, and eventually
moved to Oregon where
sons David and Bradley were
born. While Claude served
in the military, Nana was a
consummate homemaker and
mother. She was a member
of Keizer Christian Church
for many, many years. She
kept in touch with family and
friends throughout her many
years and enjoyed all life had
to offer.
After Claude’s death in
2009, she moved to Decatur,
AL to be near her son
Bradley and his wife. She
enjoyed almost seven years of
merrymaking, trips around
the
country,
weddings,
graduations, card parties and
good ol’ family and friend get-
togethers.
She is survived by her
son, Bradley (Sherrill), step-
daughter Claudia (Reno) and
two grandsons, Alexander
(Maegan)
and
Andrew
(Britney).
After a celebration of
life at Keizer Christian
Church, Nana will be buried
