CELTS: Disappointing pair
of games to close season

the dish going 2-for-3 with
two runs scored and an RBI.
McNary managed only
four hits in an 11-0 loss to
McMinnville High School
Wednesday, May 11.
“McMinnville’s
pitcher
is probably the best in the
league, but that doesn’t ex-
cuse us from having at least
marginal at bats,” said Larry
Keeker, McNary head coach.
Two days later, the Celt-
ics finally got their offense
moving to start the game, but
the Sprague Olympians were
there to meet them at seem-
ingly every turn in a 12-11
loss.
Sprague had a one-run
lead after the first inning, but
McNary unloaded for five in
the top of the second inning.
Sprague closed the gap to 5-4
in the bottom of the frame
and took the final lead with a
five-run third.
Gilbert led the team at
the dish going 3-for-4 with a
run scored and a RBI. Ismay
went 2-for-3 with two runs
scored and a RBI. Collin
Young, Matthew Koopman
and Gordon had two RBIs
each.

are a good team, but they’re not a team that
can turn it on or off whenever they want.
They have to put the gas pedal down the en-
tire time.”
The Lady Celts paired their runs in the sec-
ond and fourth innings against the Saxons. In
the second, Madisen Oliver scored on a passed
ball and Faith Danner hit an RBI-single scor-
ing Hannah Carr. In the fourth, Sabella Alfaro
hit a two-RBI single.
While the win went to McNary, it took a
toll in other ways. Carr, the team’s second base-
man, was injured badly enough that she would
sit out the team’s final game three days later.
In the game with McMinnville, McNary
outhit the Grizzlies 15-11, but stranded nine
runners on base en route to the 5-3 loss. Carr
went 4-for-4, Emma Kinler went 3-for-3 at
the dish with a runs scored; Oliver slapped a
double and Witt hit a triple before stealing
home in the game.

we had the potential to beat
all three teams, but every little
thing went wrong,” said Celt
Isaiah Holt. “We kept fight-
ing, and there were things
we could have controlled and
done better, but some of them
were just out of our hands.”

While winning the title was
a source of pride, Van Voorhis
said he hoped for a ripple ef-
fect.
“Kyle Torres (a McNary
alum) inspired me to train hard
when I was running with him,
and I really just hope I can mo-
tivate the younger athletes to
do the same thing,” he said.
Van Voorhis was also part of
a 4x100 relay team – with Aus-
tin Brown, Levi Timmons and
Anthony Nguyen – that took

weighed heavily. With players in different posi-
tions to fill the gap, McNary piled up seven
errors.
“We were full of injuries by the end of the
week. We hit well, but we weren’t there to back
each other up like we have been,” Oliver said.
The Olys never relinquished a 2-1 lead after
the first inning and the Celts left 10 runners
on base. With no outs in the seventh inning,
McNary had already scored two runs and had
bases loaded, but a double play and fly out
ended the rally.
Senior Kinsey McNaught led the Celtics at
the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Celts had two non-conference games
planned before the first round of the playoffs.
Witt and Oliver were both ready to focus on
the future.
“At this point, none of those games last
week even matter so we need to keep moving
forward,” Oliver said.
“We know we need to take every game se-
riously because if we lose, we’re done,” Witt
added.
gold with a time of 42.78 sec-
onds.
“That was great because
we’d been losing to West Salem
(High School) the entire sea-
son, but we beat them when it
counted,” Van Voorhis said.
Nguyen said the team mem-
bers knew they had the speed
to win the title, but it took time
to get the hand-offs down.
“When we faced them in
the Jesuit Twilight Relays, we
thought we would have won
if one of the other runners
hadn’t fallen into our lane,”
said Nguyen. “It means a lot
to us because we’ve had a lot
of teams take that title and it
makes a solid statement about
our program.”
Celt Kailey Doutt is headed
to the state meet as an alternate
in the 800 meter race after tak-
ing second at the GVC meet
with a time of 2:19.50.
Brown Timmons, Nguyen
and Van Voorhis took third in
the 4x400 relay with a time
of 3:28.64, and the girls 4x100
relay team of Alyssa Looney,
Courtney Giessinger, Dauma-
nique Rodriguez and Duran
took bronze with a time of
50.40 seconds.

Organizers are looking for
help in gathering information
on sports highlights for each
year in McNary’s history. Spe-
cifically, they would like to in-
clude important information
on teams or individuals who
did great things in sports dur-
ing their time at McNary, as
well as afterward in college
and beyond. Information
about former athletes who
went on to do great things
beyond the courts and field is
also welcome.
